Revised NIH Grants Policy Statement

The NIH has announced the publication of a revised NIH Grants Policy Statement. The revision is applicable to all NIH grants and cooperative agreements with budget periods beginning on or after October 1, 2010. The revision supersedes, in its entirety, the NIH Grants Policy Statement (12/03) as a standard term and condition of award. For budget periods that began between December 1, 2003 and September 30, 2010, however, the December 2003 NIH Grants Policy Statement will continue to be the standard term and condition for all NIH grants and cooperative agreements.

The NIHGPS provides both up-to-date policy guidance that serves as NIH standard terms and conditions of awards for grants and cooperative agreements, and extensive guidance to individuals that are interested in pursuing NIH grants.
The revision incorporates NIH policy changes since the December 2003 version, policy clarifications, public policy changes, terminology changes, new chapters, chapter revisions, reorganization of the document, as well as other document enhancements such as a new chapter numbering schema. Some sections have been rewritten to provide clarity; however, the overall policies have not changed. The revised policy is available at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/nihgps_2010/index.htm. Significant changes also are outlined in the following document: http://grants.nih.gov/grants/policy/nihgps_2010/Significant_Changes_NIH_GPS_10_1_2010.doc.

Sponsorships Available for “Epigenetics in Development and Disease”

The University of Miami, Nature Publishing Group and Scripps Florida invite you to attend "Epigenetics in Development and Disease," the 44th Miami Winter Symposium, February 6 through 9 at the JW Marriott Marquis Miami, 345 Avenue of the Americas. University of Miami faculty, staff and students may apply for sponsorship, which if accepted, would cover the cost of registration. A limited number of sponsorships are available and will be handled on a first-come, first-served basis.

This year's symposium will feature awardees and guest speakers Peter Jones, Ph.D., D.Sc., The H. Leslie Hoffman and Elaine S. Hoffman Chair in Cancer Research  at the University of Southern California; Andrew Feinberg, M.D., M.P.H., King Fahd Professor of Molecular Medicine at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine; Rudolf Jaenisch, M.D., professor of biology at  Massachusetts Institute of Technology; and Danesh Moazed, Ph.D., professor of cell biology at Harvard Medical School.

Sponsorship applications are due November 19, and priority will be given to post-doctoral and graduate students and to those presenting a poster. Early bird rates are available for all other applications received by November 18. For more information or to download an application, please visit the symposium website.

Coulter Center’s Biological Modifiers Core Offers Novel Methods to Generate Monoclonal Antibodies

All UM investigators are eligible to use the many services offered by the Biological Modifiers Core at the Wallace H. Coulter Center for Translational Research, including novel gene-based immunization methods for generating monoclonal antibodies.

The methods, which include "a targeted/opsonized nanoparticle based platform," "in vivo electroporation," and "Water-In-Oil liposome based platform," have notable advantages. For one, they eliminate the need for "protein purification." For another, plasmids for encoding any protein/antigen are easy to obtain, produce or purchase, and result in the expression of native forms of the antigen/proteins.

Other services available at the BMC include the design of immunogenic fusion peptides and standard methods for generation of monoclonal antibodies.

For further information or to arrange use of such services, please contact Pirouz Daftarian Ph.D., director of the Biological Modifiers Laboratory, at 305-243-7919 or pdaftarian@med.miami.edu.

Subject Enrollment Policy Reminder: For Clinical Researchers and Study Teams

This is a reminder of the University's policy for clinical research subject enrollment. We track all subjects involved in clinical research protocols that test a drug, device or biologic and/or involve procedures, lab tests, and/or interventions on a patient. According to the policy, a principal investigator (or their designee) must submit a research subject enrollment/disenrollment form within 24 hours of subject consent or disenrollment from a study (for any reason other than the end of the study). You can submit the form on the Clinical Research Initiation Services (CRIS) Web site or by entering the subject's enrollment status in Velos. For more information, visit the enrollment policy or browse the FAQs .

Notification of the CRIS office or the Jackson Health System Clinical Trials Office (JHS-CTO) of subject enrollment at UM or JHS does not relieve investigators of their responsibility to notify the Institutional Review Board (IRB) of subject enrollment at the time of the protocol's continuing report submission per IRB policy. If subjects are enrolled at or participate in studies at a JHS facility, investigators are also responsible for notifying the JHS-CTO within 24 hours, as required per JHS policy.

More information:

JHS CTO and CRIS Forms

The Jackson Health System Clinical Trials Office and the Clinical Research Initiation Services Office have revised the following policies and forms:

• Effective April 1, the JHS CTO will require principal investigators or their designated research staff to complete a research encounter ticket for each patient's protocol-related visit. The new form will enable the JHS CTO to accurately bill and designate the correct modifiers for routine care and study-related care on claims, as required by the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services. The research encounter ticket will be required in addition to the patient consent form. For more information, please contact Eve Sakran at ESakran@jhsmiami.org.

• JHS CTO has revised its application form (available at http://uresearch.miami.edu/?p=268). Fees have changed and waivers will need to be requested on a case-by-case basis. Please send your materials to CRIS at cris@med.miami.edu for review before sending them to the JHS CTO.
• CRIS has revised their forms for new studies and amendments to make them more user-friendly (available at http://uresearch.miami.edu/?p=268). For more information, please send an e-mail to cris@med.miami.edu.
