AAMC Team Evaluates Miller School for Prestigious Award

For the second year in a row, the Miller School is among three finalists for the Spencer Foreman Award for Outstanding Community Service. This is the third time the Miller School's longstanding commitments to community service and compassionate health care for all patients have garnered the attention of the awarding body, the Association of American Medical Colleges (AAMC), which bestowed the inaugural award on the University in 1993.

President Shalala to Discuss Health Care Reform
UM President Donna E. Shalala to discuss new health care reform law tomorrow at noon.
Landmark legislation was signed this past March to overhaul the nation's health care system and guarantee access to medical insurance for millions of Americans. University of Miami President Donna E. Shalala will present "UM and Health Care Reform" tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon in the UM Fieldhouse (adjacent to the BankUnited Center) on the Coral Gables campus, multipurpose room. President Shalala will provide her insight on how the Health Care Reform Law will affect not only the state of health coverage in the U.S., but also the UM community.
Department of Medicine Embraces New Curriculum on Professionalism

The Department of Medicine will launch a new curriculum designed to teach the important principles underlying professionalism in medicine and the physician-patient relationship. One major component of the new three-part curriculum is the 12-week Professionalism Lecture Series, which begins Monday, September 13.
The curriculum was designed by a planning committee under the direction of Arvey Rogers, M.D., professor emeritus of medicine and assistant dean of continuing medical education, working collaboratively with Stephen Symes, M.D., associate professor of medicine and director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program, and Panagiota Caralis, M.D., J.D., professor of medicine and associate director of the Internal Medicine Residency Program.
Sylvester Radiation Oncologist Receives ARRO Educator of the Year Award

Jean L. Wright, M.D., assistant professor of radiation oncology and member of the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, has been recognized as an Educator of the Year by the Association of Residents in Radiation Oncology (ARRO). The award, given to 40 educators across the nation, is presented in partnership with the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO).

The Miller School's Jianqin Wei, M.D., has been named the 2010 "Stop Heart Disease Researcher of the Year" by the Florida Heart Research Institute.
Dr. Wei, a trained interventional cardiologist, unrelenting researcher and newly appointed assistant research professor of medicine, was honored on August 21 at the annual meeting of the Florida Chapter of the American College of Cardiology held in Kissimmee.
Basic Science Chairs Launch Discovery Science Grand Rounds
The basic science department chairs at the Miller School will launch Discovery Science Grand Rounds the second Thursday of each month starting Thursday, November 11, from 5 to 6 p.m. at the Lois Pope LIFE Center, seventh-floor auditorium.
International Medicine Institute to Consult on World Class Hospital in Abu Dhabi
The Miller School's International Medicine Institute has been awarded a contract to provide consulting services for a new, state-of-the-art hospital in Abu Dhabi -- the Dr. Abdul Rahim Jaffar Hospital. The Institute was selected from among several bidders for proposals based on the clinical and educational reputation and expertise of the University.
Miller School Organizes First Colorectal Cancer Screening Fair for Uninsured

Gastroenterologists from the Miller School joined forces with colleagues at the University of Michigan, UM's Mitchell Wolfson Sr. Department of Community Service (DOCS), and the MedPals Foundation to orchestrate the first-ever large-scale Colorectal Cancer Screening Fair. The event took place August 14 and 15 at the Saint John Bosco Clinic for uninsured patients in Miami.
Interfaith Dinner Builds Bridges While Marking the Start of Ramadan
More than 80 people observed the start of Ramadan with an interfaith dinner designed to build bridges between Muslims, Christians and Jews. The Islamic Society of the University of Miami - Medical Division (ISUM-MD) held an interfaith dinner on August 17 to mark the beginning of the month of Ramadan. Held in a conference room at Jackson's Diagnostic Treatment Center, the dinner was co-sponsored by the Jewish Medical Students Association (JMSA) and the Christian Medical Association (CMA) with the intent of building bridges of understanding between the three faith groups.
