The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety has received an endorsement from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). The first center of its kind in Florida, the Center for Patient Safety joins an elite group of 21 endorsed programs currently holding the prestigious distinction. Other endorsed centers include Harvard, Stanford, Mayo Clinic and UCLA.
"We are proud of the work we do at the Center for Patient Safety, and the ASA's endorsement further reinforces the caliber of the education and training that we provide," said David J. Birnbach, M.D., M.P.H., Center director and executive vice chair of anesthesiology.
The endorsement also is good news for patients. Evidence suggests that simulation education has a positive impact on patient safety and quality of care. Anesthesiology has traditionally been at the forefront of simulation research and training, and ASA's leadership of the endorsement program demonstrates this type of training remains a top priority for the specialty.
"We are delighted to bestow this recognition on the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety," said Alex Hannenberg, M.D., president of the ASA. "The endorsement will serve as a guidepost for our members and all anesthesiologists who are looking to complete high quality simulation-based continuing medical education."
The approval process is extensive, including a review of the Center's mission, educational offerings, curriculum development, instructor and course effectiveness, program leadership, infrastructure, and standing with the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education.
