The Miller School's Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME) hosted the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education's 2010 Spring Meeting last month.
More than 100 CME experts representing leading medical schools in the United States and Canada gathered at the Mayfair Hotel & Spa in Coconut Grove April 14 to 18 to discuss cutting-edge CME developments and research at the conference, "Academic CME: Developing Faculty and Improving Care."
The Miller School's Laurence Gardner, M.D., executive dean for education and policy, gave the opening remarks and introduced the presenting faculty, who included influential educators dedicated to the advancement of continuing medical education for the ultimate improvement of patient care. Richard Tiberius, Ph.D., director of the educational development office, addressed the importance of mentoring in CME.
Excellent educational sessions captivated the audience with diverse, creative, interactive instructional designs modeling how to enhance the CME learning experience. Monica Broome, M.D., assistant professor of clinical medicine, and Patricia Masters, MSN, director of the Division of CME and the society's membership chair and southern region representative, participated in a "Fish Bowl" to demonstrate interactive and engaging educational formats.
Society members also elected a new president, Todd Dorman, M.D., FCCM, associate dean and director of CME at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, who said, "The SACME Spring Meeting was a huge success by any measure."
Boasting more than 200 members, the society was established in 1976, originally as the Society of Medical College Directors of Continuing Medical Education, to promote the research, scholarship, evaluation and development of continuing medical education/continuing professional development to enhance the performance of physicians and other health care professionals in the United States, Canada and beyond.
