Coleen Atkins, Ph.D., assistant professor of neurological surgery, and Lana Jones Mawhinney, neuroscience graduate student at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis, took the lead at the Miller School's Brain Fair 2010 on March 20 at Miami Science Museum. The free event brought in a crowd of more than 1,100.
The Fair was designed to provide a fun, activity-filled course in neuroscience for children, starting with the basics of neuroanatomy, aspects of how the brain works, and informative seminars on learning and memory. At the various booths, children could put together brain puzzles, build a neuron, and purify DNA. Representatives from the Walk Safe and Bike Safe programs also spoke on the importance of street and bike safety and provided tips to help prevent spinal cord and brain injuries.
Among the advanced seminars for adults was an expert panel discussion with Ralph Sacco, M.D., professor and chair of neurology, Walter Bradley, D.M., professor and chair emeritus of neurology, Bonnie Levin, Ph.D., associate professor of neurology, and Clinton Wright, M.D., associate professor of neurology, who discussed successful aging strategies, stem cell therapy, the uses of cord blood, autism as it relates to vaccines, and the effects of drug addiction.
