Vinata Lokeshwar, Ph.D., professor of urology and co-director of urology research, was the program committee chair for the eighth World Basic Urological Research Congress held in New Orleans November 5 to 8. Bringing together some of the preeminent scientists in the world researching urologic issues, the Congress convened as a joint meeting between the Society for Basic Urologic Research and the European Society for Urological Research.
Two other Miller School urology faculty members, Angelo Gousse, M.D., professor of urology, and Bal Lokeshwar, Ph.D., professor of urology and co-director of urology research, delivered lectures.
The theme of the Congress was "Molecular Diagnostics and Therapeutics in Urology." More than 200 members and non-members from the world over attended the program, which included invited speakers from Europe and the U.S., a poster session, awards and job fair. The presentations were designed to help the Congress meet its goals of strengthening dialogue between basic and clinical scientists and to accelerate the translation of new diagnostic and prognostic markers and treatments to the patient bedside.
The Congress also included a first-ever Grants' Workshop advising scientists of specific elements for research funding. Officials from various agencies, including the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, National Cancer Institute, Center for Scientific Review, Department of Defense and the VA participated and answered questions regarding new review criteria and funding.
Members include urologists, medical oncologists, molecular biologists, biochemists, immunologists, and epidemiologists among others. Both organizations are involved in treating and conducting research to improve the diagnosis and treatment of urologic cancers and benign urologic diseases. Dr. V. Lokeshwar is also the current secretary of the Society for Basic Urological Research.
