Dozens of South Florida men gathered at Morton's The Steakhouse on Brickell Avenue March 8 for the Second Annual Men's Event, which raised nearly $50,000 for prostate, colon and rectal cancer research at the Miller School. Marc E. Lippman, M.D., professor and chair of medicine, co-chaired the event, which was conceived more than 35 years ago in Denver to bring more attention to men's cancers. It's produced by the National Cancer Prevention Fund and has now expanded to multiple cities.
Among those in attendance were Bart Chernow, M.D., vice provost for technology advancement and vice president of special programs, Richard Cote, M.D., professor and chair of pathology, and Alan Pollack, M.D., Ph.D., Sylvester Professor and chair of radiation oncology.
Attendees started the evening with a cancer briefing, cocktail reception and silent auction, followed by dinner and a live auction. Steve Manzi, co-chair of the Men's Event and General Manager of Morton's, said he was "honored to host such an important event, because cancer has in some way touched the lives of almost everyone in the United States."
Fox News National Correspondent Phil Keating emceed the program and live auction, which included a couple's premier package at the Biltmore and guided deer hunt along Lake Okeechobee. The largest bid was placed on Dr. Lippman himself. One guest paid $5,000 to dine with him at his home. Dr. Lippman said he hopes that the extraordinary research at the Miller School will ultimately find a cure for cancer and "initiatives such as the Men's Event help us get closer to that goal each day."
