Lack of Access to Healthy Food May Contribute to Health Disparities in Kidney Disease
Dr. Myles Wolf, left, and Dr. Orlando Gutierrez
Racial disparities in kidney disease outcomes are among the most glaring in the U.S. health system in that blacks are up to four times more likely to progress to end stage renal disease than whites, and have much higher rates of cardiovascular disease and mortality in early chronic kidney disease. Until now the differences have largely been blamed on genetic susceptibility and socioeconomic inequalities leading to poor access to care. Miller School researchers now have evidence that not being able to afford a healthy diet also may play a significant role.

The findings will be published in an upcoming issue of the Journal of the American Society of Nephrology in an article titled "Impact of Race and Socioeconomic Status on Serum Phosphate Concentrations in the Chronic Renal Insufficiency Cohort Study (CRIC)."

Lab Tech is Honored for 50-Plus Years of Service

Dozens of Miller School staff and faculty turned out Friday to bid farewell and say thank you to pathology lab technician Arturo Monteil, the Miller School's longest serving employee. Monteil, who began working at the Miller School in January 1960, more than 50 years ago, received a certificate of appreciation for his dedicated and meritorious service from UM President Donna E. Shalala, Miller School Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., and Richard Cote, M.D., professor and chair of pathology, at a breakfast held in his honor on the patio at Bascom Palmer Eye Institute. Second from left, he is flanked by, from left, David Andrews, M.D., associate professor of clinical pathology, Cote, and Bernard Steele, M.D., professor of pathology.

UHealth Sleep Program Takes First Place in Co-Ed Division at the Great Grove Bed Race

Sebastian the Ibis (right) rallies the crowd as he escorts the UHealth Sleep Program team to the starting line at the Great Grove Bed Race.

The UHealth Sleep Program team was joined by more than 30,000 people on the streets of Coconut Grove for the 1-800-411 Pain Great Grove Bed Race, where they took first place in the co-ed division over Labor Day weekend. Thirty two teams competed in this year's race, which consists of  homemade beds rolling on wheels down Grand Avenue in Coconut Grove. Teams were awarded prizes based on theme, décor and racing success.

The event, officiated by Indy 500 racer and grand marshal Tony Kanaan, raised $20,000 for the UHealth Sleep Program and Alonzo Mourning Charities, doubling last year's proceeds.

Guardians of the Ribbon: Pink Heals Tour Heads to University of Miami

The Guardians of the Ribbon, a group of dedicated firefighters who drive pink fire trucks across the United States to help support women in their fight against breast cancer and encourage men to get involved, are making their way across the country on the Pink Heals Tour 2010. Their next stop: the University of Miami. Tour members will arrive on the medical campus this Thursday from 10 a.m. to noon and will be stationed in the Sylvester courtyard to help raise awareness and funds for cancer research. So don't be alarmed when you see a pink fire truck and firefighters in pink uniforms. Instead, join Joyce Slingerland, M.D., Ph.D., director of the Braman Family Breast Cancer Institute at sylvester, and others as they support this national event.
