Roshi Joan Halifax Presents “Being with Dying: Compassionate and Mindful End-of-Life Care:
A Contemplative Approach"

The Department of Epidemiology and Public Health will host Roshi Joan Halifax, director of the Upaya Institute and Zen Center, a Buddhist monastery in Santa Fe, New Mexico, for Grand Rounds this Friday from 9 to 10:30 a.m. at Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center, conference room 1301. Her presentation, "Being with Dying: Compassionate and Mindful End-of-Life Care: A Contemplative Approach," will address skills of mindful awareness, emotional balance, equanimity and compassion around issues of death and dying, covering aspects of changing the inner and outer culture of care of the dying with the aim of reducing trauma, burnout and distress in health care professionals.
Halifax is also a Buddhist teacher, Zen priest and founder and head teacher at the center. The "Being with Dying" program at the Upaya Institute and Zen Center trains health care providers in the psychosocial, ethical and spiritual aspects of dying and the means to implement these skills in traditional medical settings.
