Two Miller School Faculty Honored with Health Care Heroes Awards

Two Miller School of Medicine faculty members were honored at the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce Health Care Heroes Awards at Parrot Jungle Thursday afternoon. W. Jarrard Goodwin, M.D., chief medical officer of Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center and professor of otolaryngology, was presented the premier honor at the luncheon, the AXA Advisors Lifetime Achievement Award.

A trio of UM leaders declared at the Miller School's Annual General Faculty Meeting Monday that as improvements are seen in the world economy, the University is moving cautiously but resolutely toward all the goals of its strategic plans.

Dr. Margaret Pericak-Vance Receives 2010 Claude Pepper Memorial Award

Margaret Pericak-Vance, Ph.D., the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Professor of Human Genomics and director of the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, was recognized for her innovative research in Alzheimer's disease at the United HomeCare Services' 16th Annual Claude Pepper Memorial Awards ceremony at Jungle Island in Miami on May 6.

Pedro Ruiz, M.D., Receives Distinguished Service Award for Ennobling Profession of Psychiatry

Pedro Ruiz, M.D., executive vice chairman and director of clinical programs in the Miller School's Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Sciences, was honored with the American Psychiatric Association's Distinguished Service Award for 2010 on Monday.




Opening a Door to Hope

Attending the check presentation ceremony were, from left, Bob Dickinson, chairman of the board of Camillus House; Denise Goldson Rau, Camillus House vice president of development; Brother Raphael Mieszala; Marc Williams, Camillus House board member; Rudy Fernandez, UM vice president of government affairs; Juan-Carlos del Valle, UM director of government affairs; Bill Biondi, MAMCO executive vice president; Keith "Fletch" Fletcher, UM director of the Butler Center for Volunteer Service and Leadership Development; and Marcelo Radice, UM Health System executive director of Inter-American initiatives.

Wexford Science+Technology, a real estate investment and development company, and the Urban Research Park presented Camillus House with a $100,000 donation toward the construction of its new campus during a ceremony at the Somerville Residence last Friday.


University of Miami Hosts International Meeting of CME Professionals

The Miller School's Division of Continuing Medical Education (CME) hosted the Society for Academic Continuing Medical Education's 2010 Spring Meeting last month.


Roberto C. Heros, M.D., accepted the 2010 Harvey Cushing Medal at a special ceremony during the AANS annual meeting in Philadelphia.
Roberto Heros, M.D., Awarded Prestigious 2010 Harvey Cushing Medal

Roberto C. Heros, M.D., professor and co-chair of neurological surgery and residency program director, was honored with the 2010 Harvey Cushing Medal, the highest award given to a neurosurgeon by the American Association of Neurological Surgeons (AANS). A Miller School faculty member for 15 years who is internationally known in his field, Heros was recognized for his dedication and contributions to neurosurgery and his outstanding leadership in the AANS, a scientific and educational association.
