UM Researchers Co-Author First Set of Studies for the NIH’s National Study of Hispanic Health
|
Research associate Claudia Chambers demonstrates the proper use of a sleep monitor to a participant in the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos. |
Less than four years after the NIH launched the largest long-term health study of Hispanic/Latino populations, researchers at the four sites, including the University of Miami, have published their first papers. The research appears in the August issue of Annals of Epidemiology.
The first study titled "Design and Implementation of the Hispanic Community Health Study/Study of Latinos" examines the rationale behind the study, the objectives, design and how it will be implemented. Neil Schneiderman, Ph.D., professor of psychology, and Leopoldo Raij, M.D., professor of medicine, were authors on the paper.

Researchers Identify Risk Factors for Angioplasty Complication
|
Mauro Moscucci, M.D., M.B.A., professor and vice chair of medicine |
Physicians performing percutaneous coronary interventions (angioplasty) frequently encounter a number of challenges during the procedure. Among the complications is retroperitoneal hematoma, the pooling of blood just outside the abdominal cavity -- a condition associated with high mortality and morbidity. Identifying risk factors for this complication could lead to modifying angioplasty strategies to reduce the chance of occurrence.
Dean Goldschmidt Welcomes New Students and Encourages Community Service
At freshman orientation for the Class of 2014, Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., displayed the newest issue of University of Miami Medicine magazine, the special "Healing Haiti" edition, which chronicles the school's extraordinary response to the catastrophic January 12 earthquake in the Caribbean nation. As the Miller School's newest medical students embark on their paths to earning M.D.s, they will find that studying medicine is challenging and rewarding - and a privilege.
These and other words of wisdom were delivered by Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., on August 11 as he welcomed the Class of 2014 to the Miller School and reminded the freshmen they were beginning an education that would allow them to join the ranks of one of the most respected professions. Their Miller School education, he said, will prepare them well for the point in their careers when they will choose medical paths such as family medicine, surgery, ophthalmology, global health, or other areas in the vast field of health care. But, he emphasized, whatever path is chosen, "find your passion. And whenever you do, go for it. Once you find your passion in medicine you'll never have enough of it."
Help UM’s Debbie School Win $500,000 to Renovate Classrooms

In celebration of Kohl's Cares program's 10th anniversary of helping kids, they will be donating $500,000 to 20 schools for a total of $10 million. The top 20 schools by vote through Facebook will be awarded the grant and Debbie School needs the University community's help to win!
