Miller School Team Finds Genetic Causes for Dilated Cardiomyopathy in Pregnant Women
|
Ray E. Hershberger, M.D. |
A team of researchers led by the Miller School's Ray E. Hershberger, M.D., professor of medicine and associate director of the Cardiovascular Division, has for the first time established that some cases of cardiomyopathy during or shortly after pregnancy have a genetic cause.
Their study, Rare Variant Mutations in Pregnancy-Associated or Peripartum Cardiomyopathy, will be published in the May 25 edition of Circulation but appeared Monday in the online version of the nation's leading journal of cardiovascular medicine. The article provides clinicians critical information on managing women, as well as the families of the women, who are diagnosed with cardiomyopathy, or heart muscle disease, of unknown cause during or after pregnancy.

The Kalish Family Dedicates the Endowed Chair in Stem Cell Transplantation
A standing-room only crowd celebrated the official dedication of The Kalish Family Endowed Chair in Stem Cell Transplantation to Krishna V. Komanduri, M.D., last week, a generous gift designed to help one of the world's leading stem cell transplant innovators fulfill his dream of curing the kind of dreadful cancers that claimed successful businessman Ronald Kalish in the prime of his life.
"Ron and I came from humble means and ... his brilliance and his success enabled this magnificent gift that my family and I are proud to give to Krishna,'' philanthropist Nedra Kalish said at the May 7 chair dedication at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center. "My son [Geoff], having the same brilliance and success that his father did, enables this endowment and this chair.''
DNA Day a Big SuccessFrom left, Martin Kohli, Arevik Ress, Ashley Beecham, Gary Beecham and Zhanna Kozhekbaeva were some of the 95 volunteers who helped out during DNA Day 2010.
Organized by the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics at the Miller School, DNA Day 2010 drew more than 500 people, including nearly 300 children. The event, designed to educate kids about genetics, was held April 25 at the Miami Science Museum.
"The primary goal of this activity was for children to have a hands-on connection with some specific genetic concepts, all while having fun," said Susan Hahn, genetic counselor at the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, who co-directed the event. "Based on the reaction of our participants, we are confident that we achieved this goal. You know you are engaging all levels when not only are the children asking questions, but the parents are too."
