24th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner Raises More Than $6.3 Million
Marc and Nick Buoniconti are pictured with the 2009 sports legends and other honorees at the 24th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner.
NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son Marc hosted a full house of 1,300 guests and raised $6.3 million at the 24th Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, held October 6 at the Waldorf=Astoria in New York. The dinner benefits The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis, the fundraising arm of The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the Miller School. In addition, during the evening an anonymous donor made a surprise pledge of $10 million to fund the human clinical trials initiative at The Miami Project. Miller School Hosts Expert Panel on Improving Patient Communication
Monica Broome, M.D., FACP, left, and Paul Haidet, M.D., FAACH, speak to a group of patients about how to improve communication with their doctors at a luncheon on Miami Beach.
Better communication is the key to better health, according to experts on communication in health care. Knowing how to bridge the patient-doctor communication gap could directly affect the amount and quality of information patients receive. This topic was the highlight of an October 4 luncheon held on Miami Beach and hosted by the Jay Weiss Center for Social Medicine and Health Equity and the American Academy on Communication in Health Care. Calendar to Benefit the United Way
The Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology has designed and produced a 2010 calendar that will be sold to benefit the United Way. The theme of the colorful, full-sized calendar is "Health Tips from Your Best Friend," and features pictures of the canine members of faculty and staff families and valuable health tips for each month. Abstract Deadline Approaching for Neuroscience Research Day

Neuroscientists from the South Florida academic community, and those interested in entering the field, are invited to attend the 18th annual Neuroscience Research Day at the Miller School on Friday, November 20, from noon to 5 p.m. If you are interested in submitting an abstract for the poster session, the deadline is Friday, October 30. New research is welcome, as are posters that may have been displayed at recent conferences.
