Study on Bulkamid for Treatment of Stress Urinary Incontinence

The Division of Female Pelvic Medicine and Reconstructive Surgery at the Miller School is conducting a study on Bulkamid, an investigational urethral bulking agent for minimally invasive treatment of stress urinary incontinence. You may be eligible for this study if you are seeking treatment for stress urinary incontinence (involuntary leakage of urine during physical activity such as sneezing, coughing or laughing). For more information, please contact Iliana Rivas at 305-243-5774.

Study on Acne in Men

The Department of Dermatology and Cutaneous Surgery is recruiting healthy male patients, ages 18 to 35, who previously had acne, but now have clear skin and are not taking medications. The experimental study will examine whether chocolate has an effect on acne. If you are interested in participating, please call the skin research group at 305-243-5519 for more information. You will be compensated for your time.

Genetic Differences Within the Latin American and Caribbean Populations

Help us learn more about the genetic differences within the Latin American and Caribbean populations by participating in a research study.

The University of Miami research team at the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics is interested in individuals of Latin American or Caribbean descent whose parents are still living. An individual may qualify for the study if at least three out of the four grandparents were born in one of the following countries: Cuba, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Honduras or Puerto Rico. Participation involves less than an hour. Trained staff will perform a brief medical history interview, ask a few questions about family ethnicity and draw a blood sample.

Participants will be compensated for their time ($75 per family or $25 each individual). Please call 1-877-686-6444 for more information or visit www.hihg.org.

Alzheimer’s Disease in African-American and Other Black Populations

Researchers at the John P. Hussman Institute for Human Genomics, led by Margaret Pericak-Vance, Ph.D., the Dr. John T. Macdonald Foundation Professor of Human Genomics and director of the Hussman Institute, are working to find the genetic causes of Alzheimer's disease. The goal of the research is to improve methods for diagnosis and treatment of Alzheimer's.

African-American and other black populations have been underrepresented in Alzheimer's research studies and may be especially at risk because of diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol. To address this disparity and improve research, the Hussman Institute is conducting a study of Alzheimer's in these populations.

Participants may be compensated. There are no costs or travel involved and participation is confidential. For more information, please call 1-877-686-6444, or visit www.hihg.org.

Post-Menopausal Women Needed for Study to Examine Impact of Exercise On Weight Loss

UM's Department of Exercise and Sport Sciences is looking for post-menopausal women for a research study to compare the effects of different types of exercise on weight loss. To be eligible, individuals should be post-menopausal for at least one year, not currently involved in a regular exercise program and not taking hormone replacement therapy. Additionally, participants should be non-smokers.

The study involves a supervised exercise program three times per week for eight weeks at the Medical Wellness Center. Participation in the study is provided at no cost to interested women who meet the above criteria and are able to complete the program. Benefits of the study include two DEXA scans, two complete fitness assessments and a supervised exercise program designed for weight loss.

If interested, please contact Lauren Tapp at 954-304-0432 or ltapp@temple.edu, or Joseph Signorile, Ph.D. at 305-284-3105 or jsignorile@miami.edu.

Study to Investigate Treatment to Reduce Phosphorous Intake for Chronic Kidney Disease Patients

If you have been diagnosed with chronic kidney disease (or chronic renal insufficiency), you may qualify for a research study that investigates a preventative treatment strategy that could delay complications related to chronic kidney disease. The three-month study includes: six short visits (30-60 minutes); three longer visits (three to four hours); blood draws, urine collection, oral glucose tolerance test, and echocardiogram; and taking an approved medication and/or modifying your diet. You must be 18 years of age or older. You will not be able to participate if you have problems with your liver or if you are pregnant. You will receive compensation and parking vouchers for all completed study visits. This study will be conducted at the Clinical Research Building at the University of Miami under the direction of Myles Wolf, M.D., in the Division of Nephrology and Hypertension of the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. If interested, please call Gabriela Vargas at 305-243-4782 or e-mail at gvargas3@med.miami.edu.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Study to Test Effectiveness of Anticoagulant Drug

The Interstitial Lung Disease Research Program is enrolling patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for a new NIH study to assess the effectiveness of an anticoagulant. Treatment and evaluation will last a maximum of 144 weeks.

The primary endpoint of the trial is to demonstrate reduced time to composite endpoint (all-cause mortality, non-elective, non-bleeding hospitalization, or a decrease in absolute FVC of 10 percent or more). Secondary endpoints will include the difference in mortality, all-cause hospitalizations, global ranking, major bleeding events, acute exacerbations, respiratory-related hospitalizations, cardiovascular mortality or morbidity, cerebral vascular accident, venous thromboembolism, six-minute walk distance, quality of life assessments, DLCO and lung volumes, biological response monitoring between treatment and control groups and change in FVC. The clinical trial will be performed as part of the NIH National Heart Lung and Blood Institute-sponsored Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinical Research Network. Subjects must be between the ages of 35 and 80, have progressed despite conventional therapy and maintain a stable IPF treatment regimen.

For further information, please call 305-243-3728 or e-mail the study coordinator Emmanuelle Simonet at esimonet@med.miami.edu.

Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Study to Assess the Safety and Efficacy of N-Acetylcysteine

The Interstitial Lung Disease Research Program is enrolling patients with idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis for a new study to assess the safety and efficacy of N-acetylcysteine and the combination of prednisone, azathioprine and N-acetylcysteine in subjects with newly diagnosed idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis. Treatment and evaluation will last a maximum of 67 weeks. The primary endpoint of this trial is change in longitudinal forced vital capacity measurements over 60 weeks. Secondary endpoints will include change in dyspnea and occurrences of IPF exacerbations and respiratory infections. This clinical trial will be performed as part of the National Institutes of Health National Heart Lung and Blood Institute-sponsored Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis Clinical Research Network. Subjects must be between the ages of 35 and 80, have a confirmed diagnosis of IPF with an FVC ≥ 50 percent and a DLCO ≥ 30 percent predicted.

For further information, please call 305-243-3728 or e-mail study coordinator Emmanuelle Simonet at esimonet@med.miami.edu.

Is your child anxious or depressed?

Does your teen seem anxious or depressed? Is fear or sadness causing your teen to avoid doing things he/she usually likes? The Child and Adolescent Mood and Anxiety Treatment (CAMAT) lab at the University of Miami is offering a free treatment program for teenagers (ages 12-17) who have an anxiety or depressive disorder.

• A parent must be available to accompany teens to all assessment sessions, as well as a few sessions during the treatment period.
• If eligible, the teen will receive between 8-21 treatment sessions with a trained clinician at the CAMAT program.

If you would like to learn more about how you can get help and hear more about the program, please contact the CAMAT lab at 305-284-9852 or anxietylab@psy.miami.edu.

In order to understand your child's particular feelings and behavior, after a free initial phone screening, a diagnostic assessment will be scheduled with one of our clinicians. If eligible, the study treatment will be offered free of charge.
