Led by UM President Donna E. A research powerhouse with four regional campuses, BIU was chosen earlier this year by Israel's Council for Higher Education to address Israel's looming physician shortage by launching a new medical school in the diverse and underdeveloped northern region of Galilee, in the ancient and holy city of Safed.

Miller School Faculty Publish Review of Post-Quake Care in Haiti

The University of Miami Hospital in Haiti, a 240-bed, 25,000-square foot facility, opened nine days after the January 12 earthquake.

The historic and Herculean efforts of Miller School physicians and other volunteers to build a field hospital and provide immediate emergency medical care following Haiti's January 12 earthquake are documented in an article posted last week in the online edition of the Annals of Internal Medicine.

Co-authored by Amir Jaffer, M.D., chief of the Division of Hospital Medicine, nine physician colleagues and a nurse administrator, all from UHealth, and a Miami Children's Hospital pediatrician, the article "An Academic Center's Delivery of Care After the Haitian Earthquake," serves as a guide for medical centers interested in delivering emergent trauma care following future natural disasters. The co-authors volunteered in Haiti or at the command center at the Miller School.

David J. Birnbach, M.D., M.P.H., professor of anesthesiology and director of the University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety (left), supervises anesthesiology residents as they practice clearing the airway of a mock patient.

The University of Miami/Jackson Memorial Hospital Center for Patient Safety has received an endorsement from the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). The first center of its kind in Florida, the Center for Patient Safety joins an elite group of 21 endorsed programs currently holding the prestigious distinction. "We are proud of the work we do at the Center for Patient Safety, and the ASA's endorsement further reinforces the caliber of the education and training that we provide," said David J. Birnbach, M.D., M.P.H., Center director and executive vice chair of anesthesiology.
