The Dean’s Office Celebrates UHealth and Miller School Executive Assistants at Holiday Breakfast
Executive Assistant Roberto Estrada Wins First "Dean's UCare Hero Award."

They help UHealth serve patients and myriad other constituents with compassion and remarkable efficiency. They can rearrange the tightest schedules with finesse and find cell phone numbers most think are non-existent. They can plan perfect meetings for five or 500. Accomplishing these tasks and so much more - aided by their talents for strategizing and prioritizing - are all part of the daily working life of the dozens of executive assistants who help make the health system a smooth operation.

UM Researcher Identifies Gene Linked to a Rare Form of Progressive Hearing Loss in Males

A gene associated with a rare form of progressive deafness in males has been identified by an international team of researchers led by Xue Zhong Liu, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor of otolaryngology at the Miller School, and funded by the National Institute on Deafness and Communication Disorders (NIDCD). The gene, PRPS1, appears to be crucial in inner ear development and maintenance. The findings are published in the December 17 early online issue of the American Journal of Human Genetics.

Jay Weiss Center Hosts Santa Claus in Overtown Today
About 200 children in Overtown will celebrate an early Christmas today, thanks to the generosity of Miller School employees and others who donated everything from footballs and baby dolls to cash for MP3 players for the third annual toy drive sponsored by the Jay Weiss Center for Social Medicine and Health Equity.

From left, Manassa Petithomme, Carine Brini and Teikia Williams, the center's very busy community health promoters, were happy to spend hours last week putting their present-wrapping skills to an endurance test. But they'll be even happier today when they get to help Santa Claus hand out the presents. "They're still coming in, so we've more than met our goal,'' Williams said. "This year was really, really special because we had a lot of participation.'' Everybody is welcome to attend the gift-giving ceremonies at 10:30 a.m. at Miami's Gibson Park, 401 NW 12 Street.
