Miller School Researchers Win 12 Florida Biomedical Research Program Grants

More than $6 Million in Grants from James and Esther King Biomedical Research Program and Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program to Begin January 1

Miller School physicians and scientists took another step forward in their ongoing fight to save patients from cancer, heart disease and other ailments by winning a dozen grants for crucial research and equipment with the potential to boost scientific discoveries and ultimately enhance patient care and disease prevention.

On the occasion of the 10th Ralph H. and Ruth F. Gross Biennial Lecture, an event held to honor the man whose legendary thirst for knowledge made him a regular at the Louis Calder Memorial Library, the medical library's committee wanted a speaker with a similar yen for learning. The committee chose Dean Pascal J. Goldschmidt, M.D., who used the opportunity to present a panoramic view of the development of medical knowledge and how UHealth - the University of Miami Health System - is incorporating critical advances to help access knowledge that will lead to better patient care.

Onelia G. Lage, M.D., associate professor of clinical pediatrics and director of adolescent medical education and community health, is the incoming chair of the Florida Board of Medicine.

Lage, who is serving her fifth year on the quasi-judicial panel responsible for disciplining physicians, was elected to the top post by fellow board members at a Dec. 5 meeting in Orlando. She will serve as chair in 2010.




UM Shared Resources Fair Draws Researcher Attention

Researchers from all three UM campuses gathered on the Schoninger Research Quadrangle for the Shared Resources Fair at the Miller School.

On December 2, more than 200 researchers attended the first Shared Resources Fair, sponsored by the University of Miami Office of Research and the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center.

"This year's inaugural fair was a resounding success and underscores the University's continuing commitment to supporting the shared resources that are so critical for the extraordinary work of our research community," said Richard Bookman, Ph.D., vice provost for research, who promised to make the event an annual affair.




Neonatology Division Wraps up 33rd Annual Conference, Begins Plans for the 34th
The Division of Neonatology hosted its 33rd annual international conference, Miami Neonatology 2009, at the landmark Fontainebleau Miami Beach last month.


Miller School of Medicine Supports “Walking Buddies” Program
The Miller School, in conjunction with the Brain Injury Association of Florida, is providing a free online course on traumatic brain injury awareness intended for students with a medical background. The course is available 24 hours a day seven days a week at http://www.biaf.org/app/walking_buddies.html.  


Medical Bookstore Closing

The medical campus bookstore will close on February 9, 2010. For more information, please visit www.miami-medical.bkstr.com. The bookstore is scheduled to reopen in late 2010 or early 2011.

The Florida Biomedical Research Program has announced calls for grant applications for both the James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program and the Bankhead-Coley Cancer Research Program. The James & Esther King Program advances the study of tobacco-related diseases, while the Bankhead-Coley Program promotes cancer research.
