Eighth Annual Landon-AACR Prize Lectures
Please join us as we welcome the Eighth Annual Landon-AACR Prize recipients to the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center this Friday. The prestigious international award recognizes seminal discoveries at the cutting edge of scientific novelty and significance. Sylvester is proud to host the following distinguished speakers:
Peter A. Jones, Ph.D., D.Sc., and Stephen Baylin, M.D., have revolutionized cancer research by developing and demonstrating the concept of a major epigenetic component to neoplasia. This true paradigm shift has resulted in significant improvements in cancer diagnosis and therapy. Together, they share the Kirk A. Landon-AACR Prize for Basic Cancer Research and will present "The Nuclosome: The Epicenter of the Epigenome" and "Cancer Epigenetics: Disrupting the Dance Between DNA Packaging and Cell Fate."
Charles L. Sawyers, M.D., recognized for his discovery of the mechanism of resistance to drugs such as Gleevac (imatinib), received the 2009 Dorothy P. Landon-AACR Prize for Translational Cancer Research. He will present "New Insights from Old Cancer Targets: Kinases and Nuclear Receptors."
Joseph M. Llovet, M.D., received the 2009 Landon Foundation-AACR Innovator Award for International Collaboration; Gregory P. Tochtrop, Ph.D., received the AACR Innovator Award for Cancer Prevention Research. Both will make brief presentations.
"Meet the Scientist" sessions will be held from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., followed by the lectures from 1 to 4 p.m. at Jackson Memorial Hospital's Diagnostic Treatment Center, second-floor conference room. Light refreshments will be provided. For more information on the Landon-AACR program, contact Kathy Salce at ksalce@med.miami.edu or 305-243-2287, or visit www.sylvester.org.
