Miller School’s Pediatric Research Rankings Continue to Rise
The Miller School's Department of Pediatrics enjoyed a 14.4 percent improvement in National Institutes of Health (NIH) research grants from fiscal year 2007 to fiscal year 2008, according to the National Association of Children's Hospitals and Related Institutions (NACHRI).
By contrast, during that same time span children's hospital and pediatric departments of medical schools nationwide registered only a 1.9 percent increase in total NIH appropriations awarded.
Our Department of Pediatrics managed to post two consecutive years of appreciable NIH research grant upticks, having recorded a 20.3 percent increase from fiscal year 2006 to fiscal year 2007.
Regarding NIH training grants, Pediatrics registered a 26.9 percent increase from fiscal year 2006 to fiscal year 2008.

H.Peter Larsson, Ph.D. |
Miller School Researcher Publishes Findings in a Nature Research Journal
H. Peter Larsson, Ph.D., associate professor of physiology and biophysics, has a paper titled "Strong Cooperativity Between Subunits in Voltage-Gated Proton Channels" in the January edition of Nature Structural & Molecular Biology. Larsson's paper was also displayed on the journal's Web site.
Larsson is conducting research that's shedding light on how voltage-gated proton channels function, as well as their role in triggering immune system responses.
"Proton channels are found in many cell types in the human body," Larsson explains. "They've been found in blood cells, and they're very important for the immune response in the blood cells. They're an essential part of how these blood cells kill bacteria.
