Love Thyself

By Pilar Tamburrino, M.S., LMHC, CEAP, FSAP, Assistant Director

Self-love isn’t just a trend; it's a foundational component that holds the key to our overall well-being. Think about the last time you felt genuinely content and fulfilled. Chances are, it was generated from a sense of peace and acceptance within yourself. Think of self-love as a practice, not a destination. There is no finish line you cross when you officially love yourself. Self-love is neither constant nor permanent. And we need to define it for ourselves.

According to author and motivational speaker, Jen Sincero, “We arrive here as perfect little bundles of joy and then set about the task of learning to un-love ourselves!” Mental health professionals agree that being kinder and more accepting of ourselves is important for both mental well-being and healthy relationships. However, a variety of factors (trauma, years of self-criticism, and systemic discrimination to name a few) can make this simple-sounding practice more complicated, and much easier said than done. Research shows that when we practice self-love it reduces stress and anxiety by shaping a more positive self-perception. As well as increasing our resilience against emotional setbacks. Self-love teaches us to be kind to ourselves in thought and action, which in turn reduces the daily mental chatter that often leads to stress and anxiety.

Begin by appreciating how special you are. Start recognizing your gifts and talents regularly. There will never be another person exactly like you, which makes you truly and completely unique. Follow this by practicing loving self-talk. It’s important to rewire our brains and train it to think differently. Figure out which affirmations you need to hear the most and repeat them all day long in your head. Post them all around your home as a visual reminder. Write down your favorite affirmations in the morning and evening, or say them aloud before you go to bed. Finally, let the love in.

If you are not convinced, explore a few benefits that might give you the final push toward self-love.
