Welcoming back faculty and staff

The Department of Wellness and Recreation is excited to announce that University faculty and staff are welcome to return to the Patti and Allan Herbert Wellness Center beginning Monday, Nov. 16. However, non-employee members—including spouses and dependents of employees—remain unable to use the facility at this time as we continue our phased reopening plan.

NON-EMPLOYEE MEMBERS

We recognize that our dedicated alumni and other non-employee members are eager to return. We continue to re-open in a phased approach to ensure that we can operate safely and in line with University and Miami-Dade County public health guidelines. As the University continues to slow the spread, we look forward to welcoming our remaining members back soon. In the meantime, please take advantage of all the virtual offerings available, including virtual personal training.

EMPLOYEE MEMBERS

If you are ready to return to the Herbert Wellness Center and have signed the updated waiver, you’re good to go! If you have not signed the new waiver, please log in to the Wellness Center portal where you will be prompted to sign the new form.

If you are not ready to return on Nov. 16, please email us at wellnesscenter@miami.edu no later than Nov. 13. We must receive notification in writing prior to the reopening to faculty and staff or we will reinstate your payroll/monthly deduction. Please include your name and C# or Employee ID number in your email.

Payroll deduction and prepaid memberships:

  • Payroll deduction and auto-billing will not resume until Dec. 1, which allows for the repayment of the two-week credit from when the facility closed on March 16.
  • If a faculty or staff member has a non-employee spouse or dependent included in their membership, the payroll deduction or auto-billing will be reduced to $35 per month.
  • Faculty and staff who prepaid their membership with cash, check, or credit card will have 244 days added to their expiration date. For example, adding 244 days to a membership that expired on May 31, 2020, will make the new expiration date Jan. 30, 2021.

Hours of operation: Starting Nov. 16, the facility will open Monday through Friday from 6 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday. The sales office is open Monday through Friday only from 7:30 a.m. to 8 p.m.

Guests: Only faculty and staff with a current membership are allowed to use the facility. No guest passes will be sold under any circumstances.

Lockers and towel service: The locker rooms remain closed, and towel service is not available. All members must bring their own towel or purchase a workout towel at the front desk for $2. Members who have a rental locker and towel service will not be charged until those services become available. If you have a rental locker and need to retrieve your belongings, please see the facility manager on duty.

Group exercise classes: All group exercise classes are outdoors or virtual. Indoor group exercise classes are not offered at this time.

Natatorium: The indoor pool, saunas, and spa are closed for deck resurfacing. We anticipate reopening the pool in January 2021.

Courts: Indoor and outdoor basketball courts are open but are limited to three players per basket. Each participant must bring their own ball. Racquetball and squash courts are open for single-play only (i.e. two people per court.) You must bring your own racquet.

Equipment checkout: Equipment checkout is suspended until further notice. Members must bring their own balls, racquets, eye guards, etc. Items such as workout towels, racquetball balls, and squash balls may be purchased at the front desk. All sales are final; no returns will be allowed.

Outdoor Adventures Center climbing wall: The new climbing wall located in Lakeside Village opened to students only on Oct. 5. Faculty and staff remain unable to use the facility at this time. However, if you’re interested in learning more about the new Outdoor Adventures Center, visit their website.

COVID-19 ESSENTIALS

A complete guide to our response to the COVID-19 pandemic is available at our website at miami.edu/wellness, but below are the essentials you need to know prior to your workout. While we operate in accordance with guidelines from city, county, and state officials, University policies supersede such regulations.

Face coverings are mandatory: Everyone entering the Herbert Wellness Center must wear a face covering at all times, even while working out. No exceptions.

Use the daily symptom checker: All students and employees are required to complete the daily symptom checker and show that they are “good to go” to the front desk staff.

Fitness room and Storm Zone capacity: To ensure proper physical distancing in the fitness room, some workout equipment was moved to Centre Court and capacity limits were established for the different spaces. Consider working out in the early morning through mid-afternoon to avoid waiting in line.
