Supporting Social Well-Being Through Connection
Social well-being is shaped by the relationships, communities, and support systems that help us feel connected and cared for. The University of Miami Counseling Center and COPE (Counseling Outreach Peer Educators) work to strengthen those connections across campus by creating opportunities for students to engage in conversations about mental health, learn about available resources, and support one another.
Belonging Without the Pressure
Have you ever felt pressured to participate in substance use during social activities? Early in the semester, many students are forming new friendships and looking for spaces where they feel comfortable and included. During this time, you may find yourself in situations where it seems like substance use is the expectation. Remember, it's always okay to decline a drink, choose substance-free activities, leave a situation that feels uncomfortable, or change your mind at any time. You deserve to feel safe, supported, and confident in that choices that are right for you.
Social Well-Being Matters
Social well-being mattes because strong social connections can reduce stress and improve mental and physical health. Research shows that students with higher levels of social support are more engaged in their studies and tend to perform better academically. Building friendships and supportive relationships can help students stay motivated, healthy, and successful throughout college.
