Maintain Your Occupational Well-Being

All o us have unique desires and needs in our careers, and it is important to take time to reflect on what those are and how we can achieve them. Consider some of these strategies that you can implement right away.

Think about what you value most | Reflect on the top values that matter to you for your career, items such as the opportunity to work on a team, make a difference in your community, or prestige. Keep in mind that these values will likely change as you learn more about yourself and have new experiences. Utilize interests and values assessments to learn what these values are, and do some research to see if your next opportunity will allow you to live out those values.

Take chances and put yourself out there | Your boss may not always know your career goals and how to best provide you with the tools and opportunities to get there. If you see something you want to be a part of, say something. Is there a professional development opportunity that you think could be helpful? Ask to participate. Those who advocate for themselves t work are often the ones who get the most rewards.

Weighing pros and cons | It is important to recognize that no job is perfect, and there may be aspects of your job that drain you. In these times, you should consider if those cons are dealbreaker for you. More importantly, consider if there might be options to minimize those negatives. If you feel that it is worthwhile, speak to your supervisor or an HR representative about alternative scenarios that would make your role a better fit.

Knowing when it is time for something new | You gave the job a real chance but realized it's just not the right fit for you. That is okay! Never feel stuck in a bad situation; there are always other opportunities out there and people who will support you on your journey. Spend more time reflecting on lessons learned. Also, remember you have career coaches at Toppel whom you can go to for advice and to learn more about the career resources you have available to you.
