March 2024

Dear 'Cane,

Attending the University of Miami offers you countless opportunities to enjoy nearby events that enhance your college experience. As Miami Music Week continues and with Ultra Music Festival taking place this weekend, it is important to participate in these activities safely.

While Ultra has grown to become one of Miami’s signature music events, we have experienced grave tragedies as a result of high-risk drinking and substance abuse, including the loss of a University of Miami senior student who died at the 2016 festival.

We want to remind you that it is vital to remember that 'Canes Care for 'Canes by looking out for one another and asking for help if you need it. If you are planning to attend Ultra, create a plan to keep you and your friends safe:

  • Look for on-site support staff such as Mission Control, first aid tents, police, and firefighters. Download the SaferWatch App to report emergencies directly to first responders.
  • Water stations, first aid tents, and phone charging stations are available throughout the festival. Bring an empty hydration pack or purchase a water bottle on-site to refill at water stations.
  • Travel in groups and have a designated friend. Identify a meeting time and place in case someone gets separated from the group. If taking the Metro, it will have extended hours to ensure the safe arrival and departure from the festival.
  • Leave valuable items at home. Thefts have increased over the last few years.
  • Avoid experimenting or using substances, especially if alone. Fentanyl-laced drugs are becoming increasingly common. Do not mix drugs, whether with or without alcohol. Do not accept unknown drugs or drinks from others.
  • If someone is showing signs of an overdose or alcohol poisoning, immediately call for help. The quick use of Narcan, a life-saving drug used to reverse an opioid overdose, can save a life. You can find Narcan for free at the Sandler Center. Remember that our Medical Amnesty Policy exists to protect you.

Since we recognize that most students will not be attending Ultra, all students are invited to attend 'Canes Night Live MEGA on Friday, March 22 from 7-9 p.m. at Foote Green. This event will feature live music, free food, and great giveaways.

The University of Miami is committed to your health and well-being. If you or a friend need any assistance, do not hesitate to reach out to any of the following resources:

Enjoy the rest of your semester, and go 'Canes!

Sincerely,
