Dear Fellow 'Cane,

It is with deepest sadness and regret that we inform you of the loss of a fellow student. Daniel “Danny” Bishop, a senior majoring in Mathematics and Psychology in the College of Arts and Sciences, passed away yesterday, March 4, after a tragic traffic accident on his scooter as he was commuting to campus. This accident involved a motor vehicle and is under investigation by the Coral Gables Police Department. The University has been in contact with Danny’s family, and we wish to convey our heartfelt condolences to them and his many friends. Please keep them in your thoughts in the following days.

Danny was a consummate student leader who had an incredible enthusiasm for his many involvements, including President’s 100, Orientation Leader staff, and chair of Hurricane Productions, one of the largest student organizations at UM. Originally from Coral Springs, he left a significant legacy. Danny was a role model, investing in what he loved and working hard to create a caring 'Cane community.

His friends shared that Danny was filled with positivity and passion for life. He had incredible ambition and drive and his love for math was inspiring. He was a student leader who would rise by uplifting others. Whatever he did was with authenticity and he cared for everyone he interacted with and tackled each task he undertook with determination.

Often, you would find him at Richter Library tutoring many of his fellow students, and then hear him at a Hurricane Productions event belting out his signature “Woo!” Danny was fun-loving and would want us to carry on his legacy by helping students make memories.

Danny was a brilliant student, earning a place on the President’s Honor Roll nearly every semester. He was known for his insatiable energy and determination, exemplified through his black belt in Karate and his own math tutoring business.

Teaching had been Danny’s life-long dream. He was set to begin his post-graduate career at Gulliver Preparatory in the fall to teach mathematics.

We know the University community will join us in supporting his family and many friends and honor his memory during this difficult time. Information regarding a celebration of Danny's life will be shared when details are confirmed.
