One of the most exciting times of the year for the Butler Center for Service and Leadership is 'Canes for a Change Week! Through this week-long event, you will be introduced to all of the various opportunities that you will have to engage in service and leadership experiences during your time at the U. From meeting community partners to networking with current student organization leaders to finding ways to connect service to in-classroom experiences, there is something for everyone during 'Canes for a Change Week. 'Canes for a Change Week is held from Monday, Sept. 10th - Friday, Sept. 14th throughout the Coral Gables campus. We hope to see you there and learn more about all the events here!

Create a Support Network and Unlock Your Potential
Kick-start your leadership potential alongside other first and second-year students at IMPACT. Spend a weekend at Pompano Beach exploring leadership through team-building and networking activities that will prepare you to lead throughout your time at UM. IMPACT has helped UM students with personal growth, building connections on campus and more for over 10 years. Knowledgeable student leaders from all corners of campus will guide you throughout the weekend to expand your understanding of opportunities on campus and connect you to other students in the IMPACT Leadership family.

A Day of Remembrance

A Celebration of Women
The Patricia A. Whitely Women’s Leadership Symposium (WWLS) brings the University of Miami community together to empower and celebrate women to create positive change through leadership, community and wellness. The planning committee for WWLS is a core group of students responsible for organizing the event in March 2019. Through regular meetings, members will get to plan the event, explore personal identity, connect with other student leaders, and develop a sense of empowerment. Sign up here.

Volunteer and Meet International Students
Canes Chat is a program for student leaders who want to get together with international students and learn about each other's cultures, speak English, and offer support. We are looking for any students who want to meet people from different cultures and help them adjust to life in a new country. Conversation Partners commit to meeting with their partner a total of ten hours per semester. You will schedule your meetings with your international partner at a convenient time for both of you. We hope you will help your international partner orient to the University of Miami and the city of Miami. You could meet somewhere on campus or attend a concert; it's up to you! Conversation Partners who complete the ten hour minimum requirement will receive a certificate of completion, an invitation to our Thanksgiving event, and community service hours for their time meeting with their international conversation parter.

Fall 2018 Participant Applications due September 9th
Unsure about Fall Break plans? Alternative Fall Breaks are three day service trips that take place from October 18-21. For Fall Break, groups of twelve students will travel to and volunteer with a selected community partner. Each community partner deals with a different social issue. If you are passionate about social justice, want to gain service learning experience, meet new friends, or travel to new places, consider applying to go on an Alternative Fall Break! Life Alliance Organ Recovery Agency
Join us for a panel discussion that will dispel myths and misconceptions about organ and tissue donation! Panel members include EMTs, Life Alliance Staff, and those impacted by organ donation and transplantation. Refreshments and food will be provided! Participate in a Mock Class
The Intensive English Program is recruiting volunteers to serve as members of a mock class for the International Teaching Assistant (ITA) Training Course. Volunteers will interact with the ITAs enrolled in the course and evaluate mini-lessons, serve as partners for small-talk and role-play activities, and offer insights into the mindset of young domestic college students. This is an opportunity to help orient our ITAs at UM to the UM experience and the American mindset so that they can communicate better. Join us on Thursday, September 13th at 3:30PM in Allen Hall 210.

Nominate an individual for the highest honor at the University of Miami
The Iron Arrow Honor Society was founded in the fall of 1926 and is the highest honor attained at the University of Miami. Each semester, the Iron Arrow Honor Society taps new members from throughout the University of Miami community. Currently, we are welcoming recommendations from the University community to be considered for nomination to Iron Arrow. Iron Arrow accepts individuals from all areas of UM including faculty, staff, alumni, administration, Board of Trustees members, undergraduate, medical, law, and graduate students. Communities In Schools In Miami
It’s time to put on your bowling shoes, and join Communities In Schools of Miami at our Striking Against Striking Out FUNdraiser on Sunday, September 30 at 10:00am at Bird Bowl Bowling Center – 9275 SW 40 Street, Miami, 33165. This is a great opportunity to put together an event for your colleagues or family/friends. Come out and enjoy door prizes and a 50/50 cash raffle. Kids welcome! Cost is $20 adult/$12 child (under 10 years of age) gets each bowler two-hours of bowling, bowling shoes, and a great time. One bowling lane accommodates up to six bowlers. The Butler Connection is published once a week on Thursdays during the academic year. It seeks to provide the UM community with leadership and service opportunities on campus and in the Greater Miami area. The deadline for submitting an event is TUESDAY at 5 pm. Submissions received by this deadline will be included in that week's edition of the Butler Connection.
