Department of Orientation and Commuter Student Involvement
As the Hurricane Family Connection takes a short break for the summer, we look forward to reconnecting with our returning students and families in August. We look forward to seeing you soon, whether it be at Commencement, Family Weekend, or simply a visit to campus. For our new 'Cane students and families, we will be connecting at many points this summer as we prepare to welcome you with our 'Cane Kickoff orientation program and move-in. If you need anything along the way, our department is only a quick email or phone call away.

Believe it or not, Summer 2024 is about to begin, and preparations for the Fall 2024 billing season are already underway. If your student seeks financial aid for the 2024-2025 academic year, we recommend that your student periodically logs into the View Financial Aid portal to complete the financial aid e-consent process when/if prompted. Without e-consent, your student will not receive electronic financial aid notices. Logging in periodically will allow your student to review pending Documents and Messages and act on them as soon as possible. Learn more about e-consent here.
'Canes Central plans to send communications throughout the summer on billing timelines, financial aid deadlines, and other timely topics to ensure a smooth start to the Fall term. Be Around the Corner with administrative tasks so your student can focus on academic endeavors when the Fall begins. Stay informed with all things 'Canes Central by confirming your proxy access - this will ensure you receive 'Canes Central's newsletters on Instagram and Facebook.

With summer break approaching, it can be easy to let all the progress of the past year begin to wither. Students have had opportunities to stay active physically, socially, and cognitively since August or before. Now, we enter a time when it can be difficult to stick to a productive routine, especially if a student leaves the university for a summer break. We need to encourage students to keep progressing physically, cognitively, and professionally while maintaining a well-rounded sense of well-being. Below are some ways to achieve this:
- Staying active by getting a summer membership to the Herbert Wellness Center on campus OR finding a local fitness studio or gym back home.
- Keep your circadian rhythm consistent by waking and sleeping at the same time every day, even if you don’t have anything urgent to do. Early morning direct sunlight will help with this as well.
- Be gainfully employed. Build the skills, discipline, and experience it will take to be competitive after college is over. Even if it’s not in your planned field, job experience helps you develop professional competencies. The Herbert Wellness Center is hiring summer staff now.

Senior Vice President for Student Affairs and Alumni Engagement
Thank you for your continued partnership this year as our students complete the academic year! In just a few short days, we will see some of your students become UM alumni as they walk across the stage. Our 2024 commencement will be especially poignant as a majority of the students joined us in the Fall of 2020 at the height of COVID. We will celebrate our collective resiliency at these ceremonies in a few short weeks. We appreciate the trust you have placed in us over the last four years. Congratulations to those who will join us on Thursday, May 9, for graduate ceremonies or Friday, May 10, for undergraduate ceremonies! Information about ceremonies may be found at commencement.miami.edu.
As our students wrap up the semester, there are a variety of resources available to support them through finals time, including finish strong in their residential communities, the learning commons with tutoring and math labs, and well-being resources such as the Counseling Center and Herbert Wellness Center.
For those of you with a returning student, we hope you and your student will experience a productive summer. Summer can be the ideal time to recharge after a stressful semester or put the skills and learning gained so far into practice with a summer job or internship. For our soon-to-be alumni families, we are always here for you; there are a variety of ways for your student to stay connected to the University, including our Young Alumni Leaders Council. Please know that we are still hard at work throughout the summer to prepare for the fall semester, including for Family Weekend 2024.
If you or your student needs anything, please do not hesitate to reach out.
