OFFICE OF STUDENT FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AND EMPLOYMENT

The Value of Student Employment

Celebrated the second full week in April, National Student Employment Week recognizes the valuable contributions of student employees across our campuses. While student employment has traditionally been viewed as an opportunity to earn some extra income while attending college, the value of student employment extends far beyond the monetary gains.

Studies show that students who work while attending college tend to perform better academically. The key, however, is to ensure that students do not work too many hours and learn how to effectively manage their time and priorities. With this in mind, encourage your student to seek out employment opportunities that work around their class schedules and provide them the opportunity to learn transferable skills.

Many students do not seek out work opportunities, holding out for that "perfect job" that will provide them with experience in their field of study; but most student employment jobs provide work-readiness competencies that broadly prepare them for a successful transition into the workplace, no matter their field of interest.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment posts available positions at miami.edu/jobx. Jobs are listed by program type, and the majority of student positions are posted at the beginning of the semester. Students may also email ose@miami.edu for additional information on student employment programs.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance and Employment coordinates a range of programs and services to support students throughout their time as a University of Miami student.

FROM DR. WHITELY'S DESK

SENIOR VICE PRESIDENT FOR STUDENT AFFAIRS

A Hopeful Time on Campus

I want to extend my thanks to all the family members that have supported your students and our efforts to remain open in person as well as provide an experience for remote students.

We have much to be hopeful about this month. As you may already be aware, we have begun implementing a distribution plan for COVID-19 vaccines for students at our very own Herbert Wellness Center.

This is an exciting development; however, it requires specific action by students to opt-in via CaneLink. We encourage you to check in with your student about their plan, which may include off-campus options within the State of Florida or even in your home state. More information about the COVID-19 vaccine can be found on the CDC’s website.

Thinking back to the start of this semester, we have come so far. While this year certainly presented challenges, it also provided us some victories. I am deeply proud of the recently announced undergraduate and graduate student racial justice grant recipients who will be executing projects both on-campus and within the Miami community. These are exciting opportunities for our students and faculty to work together.

I am also excited to be able to host in-person, outdoor Commencement ceremonies at Hard Rock Stadium to celebrate our graduating students' hard-earned accomplishments.

As this semester comes to a close, our students may be experiencing elevated or different stress with final projects, exams, and other end-of-semester requirements. This is an ideal time to start preparing with academic support resources, such as tutoring, the writing and math labs, and mental health resources.

For our students who will be returning in the fall, at this time, we expect to return to normal operations next semester, including a regular academic calendar and fully in-person classes. This is extremely hopeful, and we will continue to abide by health and safety guidelines with this goal in mind.

As always, if you or your student need anything, please do not hesitate to reach out. I hope that you and your family continue to stay as safe as possible and hope that you look forward to a brighter summer ahead.

Dr. Patricia A. Whitely was appointed vice president for student affairs in 1997 and promoted to senior vice president for student affairs in February 2021. In her role, she is responsible for oversight of residential life, leadership development, diversity and inclusion initiatives, service learning, orientation, student organizations, student activities, student facilities, student counseling and student health centers, Greek life, the Dean of Students Office, and the Camner Center for Academic Resources. Dr. Whitely also serves as an adjunct faculty member in the School of Education and Human Development.

COVID-19 UPDATES

HEALTH & WELLNESS

THE SANDLER CENTER FOR ALCOHOL AND OTHER DRUG EDUCATION

Healthy Behaviors for Student Success

As the end of the semester approaches, The Sandler Center for Alcohol and Other Drug Education is here to encourage healthy behaviors that set students up for success. As a family member, your partnership is key to reducing alcohol and/or drug abuse. Here are some steps you can take to ensure your student is staying healthy:

  • Talk to your student – don’t rely only on text! As a family member, you too can show a 'Canes Care for 'Canes mindset by calling your student. Seeing their face and hearing their voice can help you recognize when they need support navigating bumps in the road.
  • Be honest and transparent when speaking to your students about their choices around alcohol and/or drug use. Sharing your expectations is an important first step to encouraging healthy behavior.
  • Know how to help. Trust your instincts - if you notice a change in behavior, the Sandler Center, the Dean of Students Office, or even Case Management is here for your student.
If you have questions or don’t know how to start the conversation with your student, feel free to reach out to the Sandler Center. We're here to support you!

STUDENT VOICE

ORIENTATION AND COMMUTER STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

A Time to Look Ahead

As a rising senior, I realize that my undergraduate career is slowly coming to an end. It was just yesterday that I was a first-year student at Miami-Dade College, then transferred to my new home at the U. As many of my friends say, adulting is scary and slowly approaching. Many of my peers worry about their next classes they will be taking in the fall, internships and job opportunities or even the next steps in their college career. With course enrollment right around the corner, it might be stressful to decide which classes to take to stay on track for graduation. Remind your students that their advisors are here to help. Although it might seem stressful, I take things one day at a time. If I ever find myself lost or confused, I can always talk to my mentors and parents for guidance.

This summer, I will continue to further research on graduate programs. By starting the application process as soon as possible, I hope to stay on track with meeting deadlines. The summer is perfect for students to unwind and perhaps plan out some of their upcoming classes for the next semester. Students take classes here at the U or even elsewhere. They prep for their future while enjoying time with family, friends, or even by themselves. I hope this summer is a time of reflection, preparation, and relaxation for your students and you.

Nathalia Torres is a junior majoring in Sociology and Criminology, and minoring in Health Management and Policy & Public Health. She is a transfer student from Miami Dade College, and currently serves as a Remote Assistant. Nathalia is an active member of the President's 100, Category 5, Homecoming Executive Committee, HP Concerts, and the Pre-Physician Assistant Club.

FINAL REMARKS

ORIENTATION AND COMMUTER STUDENT INVOLVEMENT

A Season of Celebrations

The culmination of the spring semester and the academic year brings about much joy and excitement throughout campus. Although this has been a challenging year, we have observed a great sense of growth and resiliency in many students throughout our 'Canes community. Whether your student has been an award recipient, inducted into an academic honor organization, completed another rigorous semester of courses, or is graduating, there is much to reflect upon and celebrate.

As the Hurricane Family Connection takes a short break for the summer, we look forward to reconnecting with our returning students and families in August. Whether you are on campus for Commencement, Family Weekend, or simply a visit to campus, feel free to stop by to say hello. For any new students and families, we will be connecting at many points this summer as we prepare to welcome you with our 'Cane Kickoff orientation program.  If you need anything along the way, our department is only a quick email or phone call away.

The Department of Orientation & Commuter Student Involvement supports new students and families through their transition to the University of Miami.
