Advanced Cinematic Lighting

An in-depth and hands-on production course where students get introduced to, utilize and design advanced lighting setups that could help frame the state of mind, evolving emotions, and underlying motivations of the characters, and set nuanced mood, ambience, and visual impact in a narrative film.

Advanced Post Sound Editing

  • CCA 494/795 section 4J

This class develops student skills in stereo and surround sound mixing. The Advanced Postproduction Sound Mixing and Editing course is both a seminar and a workshop that provides a practical and theoretical introduction to surround sound mixing. The course explores this process from project scoping through the final mix. By the end of the course, students will have a stereo, 5.1, and 7.1 short film mix.

Advanced Producing

This course delves deep into the intricate world of film producing, focusing on advanced strategies, industry insights, and practical applications. Through a combination of theoretical lectures, case studies, and hands-on projects, students will develop comprehensive skills and knowledge essential for successful film producing in today's dynamic landscape.

Advanced TV Writing: Comedy

An advanced course designed to study comedic concepts, structure, plotting, character, and technique of writing situation-comedy and single-camera comedy for original pilots. This course will focus on key elements of comedy writing in a workshop environment covering from conception to completion of a pilot. We will discuss theories and cultural considerations of humor as well as psychological aspects of laughter and amusement while examining writing techniques for different formats.

Afrofuturism

  • CCA 494/795 section O

This course explores Afrofuturism, an international movement in cinema, music, art, literature and more featuring futuristic themes and speculative fiction that intersect with elements of African and Black diasporic history and culture. Examples include Sun Ra’s Space is the Place (1974), Marvel’s Black Panther (2018 and 2022) and Wanuri Kahiu’s Pumzi (2009).

Costume Design

  • CCA 494/795 section 1P

This course introduces the theoretical and practical foundations of costume design, including research methodologies and creative approach. Emphasis will
be placed on specific stages of the costume design process, including research, design preparation, script analysis, continuity, budgeting, contemporary production procedures, terminology, and costume department roles, and etiquette.

Experimental Media

Lectures and screenings will acquaint the student with the historical, technical and aesthetic context within which the experimental media developed, as well as the complex variations of genre and style which characterize it and inform the production process as students develop their projects.

Podcasting

Podcast Storytelling affords students the opportunity to develop a new wave of audio content, create virtual gathering spaces and has the potential to create new audiences. Students will produce projects as either stand-alone or episodic and will publish their projects on a hosting site.

From Script to Screen

Advanced production concepts and techniques explored in a variety of media. Students will produce an approved film or script. The class will explore the language of motion picture and how this language is utilized in the story telling process.

3D Modeling & Rapid Prototyping

Students will become familiar with game development’s 3D art production process. This includes understanding the complete 3D workflow, encompassing modeling, texturing, lighting, rendering, rigging, and animation. Additionally, students will gain experience in thinking and approaching tasks like a skilled 3D artist.

Internet Culture: Social Media, Image, and Our New Reality

This course will explore the impact of the internet and social media on our culture, identity, and perception of reality. With a historical lens, we will examine stan culture, culture-jamming activism, expressions of identity, and more, looking at both pre-internet and current phenomena. We will also look at the history of the internet and social media platforms and discuss how these technologies have shaped our understanding of the world around us. You will have the opportunity to explore these ideas by regularly creating content in the medium and on the platform of your choice. For example, you might create a social media campaign, a video essay, or a work of art.

Meaningful Connections

Meaningful Connections is a research-driven course on how various technologies shape and mediate human interactions. From video conferencing to virtual reality, the course investigates how we use technology to communicate, empathize, and engage with others and social issues. By examining both synchronous and asynchronous forms of communication, students will develop a nuanced understanding of how technological mediums influence our relationships and perceptions of others. Students will explore how technology affects learning, social behavior, and emotional connection through a blend of theoretical frameworks and real-world case studies. This course equips students with the critical tools to analyze the impact of interactive media on human connection, fostering a deeper appreciation of the complexities involved in navigating communication in the digital age.

AI and Journalism

The integration of Artificial Intelligence (AI) into news reporting has become an integral part of newsrooms in the digital age. In this course, students will explore the Artificial Intelligence world to seek the unique opportunities AI provides for information gathering, processing, reporting, and distribution, thereby fostering high-quality journalism. The course will introduce AI-assisted tools that can be ethically contextualized to enhance the accuracy, objectivity, balance, and credibility of news reports, while also deepening journalistic endeavors and reinforcing trust within communities to amplify truth and impact. Additionally, the course will introduce how AI can facilitate audience engagement throughout the news production and distribution processes. Furthermore, the impact of AI on the audience’s news consumption and cognitive processes will be discussed. Overall, the course will shed light on how the integration of AI will shape the future of journalism.

Civic Literacy and Judicial Discourse

This course brings women judges from across Florida to discuss how dialogue across contentious ideological lines allowed courts to reach unanimous decisions on some of the most important civil rights cases in the United States. Protagonists from some of the cases will also visit the class. The class is perfect for students who intend to go to law school or who are interested in how to move beyond the divisive political discourse characterizing today’s politics.

Gender in Advertising

The main purpose of this course is for students to recognize and challenge existing gender inequity in the advertising industry and advertisements. This course creates a “brave” space by inviting students to employ self-reflection on their intersectional identities, learn historical and cultural factors of gender inequity in advertising, and engage in critical analyses of gender roles in advertising. This course aims to facilitate students’ critical consciousness and interrogations of various modalities of gender inequities in advertising workplaces and advertisements. As a result, students as future professionals will become equipped to eliminate gender biases of working in this industry and developing advertisements.

Innovation in Advertising

In this class, students will learn strategic frameworks that apply to consumers in digital, learn the basics of digital technologies, platforms, and measurements. Students will also apply their knowledge by analyzing consumer behaviors in the digital era and developing a strategic advertising plan. You will learn how to approach digital platforms from the consumer’s perspective, and practice critical and strategic thinking skills to solve advertising problems as a strategist, using conceptual, technological, and analytical skills.
