Meet DSC Member
“People will forget what you said, people will forget what you did, but people will never forget how you made them feel.”, This quote by Maya Angelou is Catherine Butler’s mantra. Catherine has only been a part of the Dean's Student Circle for one semester, but she has quickly become one of our most dedicated School of Communication Ambassadors.
The Dean’s Student Circle Coordinator was not originally looking for another addition to the team, but Catherine's persistence was impressive and eventually allowed her a spot as a DSC Member. She has not once said “no” to help host an event or facilitate a tour for our School of Communication prospective students, which shows that her hard work has gotten her very far. Her networking has helped her move forward as a DSC member and she will continue with the team this upcoming spring semester. Catherine says:
“I love being a DSC Member because I love representing the School of Communication! The professors and peers I have been lucky enough to learn from have made the SoC a home, and I am so grateful to give back by showing prospective students and their families how the SoC can become a home for them too! I am happy to be a part of the DSC community and look forward to making even more friends and connections throughout the SoC”.
Catherine has made it a mission to make a difference for everyone who meets her, and due to that, no one will ever forget how she made them feel, which is at home in the School of Communication.

This course explores the significance of representation, particularly in screen and audio-visual media in the United States. It critically examines how these mediums mediate race and ethnicity and vice versa, employing humanities approaches such as historical inquiry, cultural interpretation, first-person essays, primary source research, and close textual analysis. The focus spans mainstream cinema, art, and alternative media, delving into the racial underpinnings of media and treating race as a form of media itself—a framing of experience, personhood, and collective identity. Additionally, the course addresses the histories of racial formation and resistance against dominant narratives by various American groups, utilizing the very media that historically marginalized them.

The School of Communication is pleased to announce the inaugural United Black Students and UTrailblazers Canes Black History Film Festival. We seek short (5 minutes or less) films based on contents in the UTrailblazers Experience, current events, and/or Black student experience(s) on a multicultural campus.
Films awarded first place will receive $1500 and second place will receive $500. In addition, the filmmaker awarded first place will have a chance to attend the ’Canes Los Angeles Film Showcase in May 2024.

The 4A’s Foundation’s Multicultural Advertising Intern Program (MAIP) is a highly intensive fellowship that provides diverse students with the opportunity to work in the advertising, communications and marketing industries. MAIP fellows interact with industry professionals on a day-to-day basis, work across multiple brands, and gain valuable professional credentials to secure their first job in the industry.
Students selected for the annual 22-week fellowship program (12 weeks of virtual online training, a 10-week internship experience (with potential extension after MAIP), and 1-week for Face of Talent) will hone their skills in a variety of advertising/marketing disciplines.

Offering ten $10,000 reporting grants issued per year to journalists reporting in-depth print and audio stories on the science, policy, business and culture of this new era of psychedelics.
In addition to underwriting individual stories, the Fellowship aims to establish and nurture a new generation of journalists covering the frontlines of this rapidly changing field.
We’re looking for big, underreported, narratively compelling stories placed in rich political, economic, scientific, and cultural contexts. We are committed to supporting journalists from diverse backgrounds and of all nationalities.
The fellowship is a project of the U.C. Berkeley Center for the Science of Psychedelics.
