A Note of Gratitude
In this month of gratitude, I share my appreciation for our compassionate communication community that serves our school so well. Thank you to all of our students, faculty, and staff, for rising to the occasion, in many challenging cases, to support each other with spirit and dedication. Thanks to all of our families and friends, whose generosity and care foster our progress through professional ambitions and personal aspirations.
I am so very proud of our accomplishments. As you will witness through some of the stories in this newsletter, we are engaged in health communication, in transformational study experiences for students, in hosting cinema events in our community, in leveraging global talent to build virtual reality programs, and in promoting creative productions and compelling research that have constructive impact. Our instructors achieve global recognition, for our professional projects, instruction, and leadership. Our students win national awards, individually and as teams. Our academic programs have steadily ascended to the top three percent in the country. But my pride transcends these accomplishments, extending to respectful processes we build through our collective work.
Communication matters. And it’s hard. But that is what we need. Communication is more than speaking: dialogue requires listening. Over the time you spend with family and friends in this month of gratitude, I encourage you to explore how to engage in dialogue, respecting differences in perspectives. Let’s work together to communicate in constructive ways, prioritizing our humanity.

We'd like to extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who strolled down the orange brick road to join us for our 2023 homecoming celebration: There’s No Place Like Home. At the University of Miami School of Communication, homecoming is a special opportunity to reconnect with old friends and to create new ones. The presence of our cherished alumni, friends, and family reminded us all that there truly is no place like home.
