i-Corps@NCATS Program Now Open

This CTSI supported I-Corps@NCATS program is free for all faculty, students and staff at the University of Miami interested in learning about commercialization of research. Since 2018, 62 teams/start-ups throughout Miami have participated in the program and a number of them have moved forward with new IP, follow-on funding, including SBIR/STTR grants, and licensing agreements.

Enrollment Tracking Policy Town Hall Meeting (Webinar)

A virtual town hall meeting is scheduled for today (Monday, March 13, 2023, from 5:00pm – 5:45pm) to answer questions regarding the implementation plan of the new policiy, Enrollment Tracking Using REDCap. This policy, jointly sponsored by the University of Miami (UM) Vice Provost for Research and Scholarship (VPRS) and the Miller School of Medicine Executive Dean for Research, requires that study teams use an institutionally supported platform to track participant accruals to human subjects research. Implementation will occur in a phased approach with significant institutional support to ensure there is minimal burden on study team members. and the plan for implementation.

Please register in advance for the Enrollment Tracking Policy Town Hall webinar. Anyone needing additional support can: (1) email TrackingQuestions@miami.edu; (2) review the FAQs document; and (3) request a more focused training for their study team, Department/Division, and/or School/College.

This class will define FDA’s 21 CFR 11 regulation, review the requirements for electronic systems and signatures and examine how Part 11 applies to electronic records in clinical research at the University. Register in advance in ULearn

IBISResearch: Create and Submit a Proposal

This class is part of the RAU Curriculum and a pre-requisite to IBISResearch: Managing Awards.

This hands-on workshop focuses on proposals and is intended for administrators and researchers to learn how to navigate the system, create a funding proposal, SF424 federal application, and budgets (including cost share and subaward budgets) in IBISResearch.  Participants will route a proposal for department approval and submit to Research Administration for final review and submission to the sponsor. 

The learning objectives of this session are:

·        Describe IBISResearch terminology 

·        Demonstrate the navigation of IBISResearch

·        Practice how to create a funding proposal and budgets (including cost share and subaward) in IBISResearch

If you would like to get credit for the RAU curriculum, please register to the RAU Curriculum in ULearn first and access this class through the Curriculum. It is important to complete this class in the order that the Curriculum is set up. If you would like to take this class as a standalone online course, please contact vprs@miami.edu.

Introduction and Overview of Clinical Trial Disclosure

This presentation is intended as an introduction to clinical trial registration and results disclosure requirements.  It also intends to provide an overview of the evolution and current state of clinical trial registration and results disclosure in Academia, especially here at the University of Miami.
Level: BEGINNER

At the end of this ILT, participants will be able to:

  • Understand the Brief History of Clinical Trial Disclosure
  • Identify the current clinical trial disclosure requirements in the US and at the University of Miami
  • Identify who is responsible for registration
  • Describe the impact of greater transparency in the clinical trial disclosure environment on academia
  • Discuss the advantages and implications of using Clinical trial disclosure databases

BME Seminar Series

The Department of Biomedical Engineering cordially invites you to attend the next BME Seminar, which will be held in hybrid mode on Wednesday, March 15th at 10 a.m.

Our seminar speaker, Dr. James Bonaiuto, will talk about ‘Non invasive investigation of cortical laminar dynamics with MEG’.

James Bonaiuto is a tenured group leader at the CNRS Institut des Sciences Cognitives in Lyon and head of the Decision, Action, and Neural Computation (DANC) lab.

The in person meeting will be at the Medical campus in CRB 710Q-R, Clinical Research Building (CRB), 1120 NW 14th St., Miami, FL 33136. Individuals may also join the session virtually in Zoom

IBISResearch: Agreements

This hands-on workshop focusing Agreements, is intended for administrators and researchers to learn how to navigate the system and create agreements in IBISResearch. Individuals who submit contracts or agreements to ORA regularly are encouraged to attend this workshop. Additionally, it is recommended that Individuals take the IBISResearch: Create and Submit a Proposal for a more in-depth knowledge of IBISResearch prior to attending this workshop.  

The objectives of this session are:

1. Demonstrate the new terminology and navigation of the system.

2. Practice how to create agreements in IBISResearch.

This is an elective course in the RAU Curriculum.

IBISResearch: Managing Awards

This hands-on workshop focusing on award management, is intended for administrators and researchers involved in setting up and managing sponsored activities in IBISResearch. Participants will create a continuation, revision, and resubmission application. They will also learn how to submit a Just-In-Time request, or respond to an Agency Request, request an award modification and create an agreement from a related proposal.

The objectives of this session are:

1. Practice how to edit and complete the Funding Award in IBISResearch.

2. Identify how to create an award modification in IBISResearch.

3. Demonstrate how to create follow-up proposals (continuation, revision, resubmission, and renewal).

This class is part of the RAU Curriculum and it is the fourth module in the IBISResearch Training. If you would like to get credit for the RAU curriculum, please register to the RAU Curriculum in ULearn first and access this class through the Curriculum. It is important to complete this module in the order that the Curriculum is set up. The pre-requisites for this class are: Introduction to IBISResearch, IBISResearch Submit and Create a Proposal Video and the IBISResearch Submit and Create a Proposal Hands-on Workshop.

Flow Cytometry Cell-Sorting and Analysis with Beckman Coulter Platforms

Beckman Coulter flow cytometry instruments provide ease-of-use, scalability and optimal performance. The Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center (SCCC) Flow Cytometry Shared Resource recently installed a Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX SRT benchtop sorter that is available for walk-up sorting by investigators at the University of Miami.  The Diabetes Research Institute (DRI) Flow Cytometry Core Facility at the University of Miami has a Beckman Coulter CytoFLEX cell analyzer and an Astrios EQ cell sorter.  This seminar will provide an overview of the capabilities of these and other Beckman Coulter flow cytometry platforms and present how they are being used for a wide range of research applications.  

This seminar is jointly hosted by the SCCC Flow Cytometry Shared Resource, DRI Flow Cytometry Core Facility, and CFAR Laboratory Sciences Core.

Workshop Microsoft Power BI Desktop Introduction

Power BI is a set of business analytics tools designed for end-users, tools that let you connect, manipulate, and analyze your data. With Power BI, you can create visualizations and reports as well as publish and share those with your colleagues.

In this session, I introduce you to the Power BI ecosystem and concepts through analyzing sample datasets using Power BI Desktop. We will learn the basics of Power BI by importing, transforming, and visualizing the data. We will create dynamic and interactive reports that can be shared with others.

Please note that Power BI Desktop are only available on the Windows platform, so that Mac users will require a Virtual machine with a Window O/S.

Workshop: Creating Interactive Maps with ArcGIS Online

This workshop will introduce you to ArcGIS Online, the ESRI’s cloud-based mapping and analysis platform. You will learn how to create interactive maps using different types of symbols, and how to add, manage, and share content.  You will also learn how to create basic web apps.

Participants should register before March 22, 2024, to receive the required ArcGIS Online credentials before the session starts. Register in advance. 

This workshop is only oriented to participants with valid UM email accounts.

Workshop R for Data Analysis

Designed for new and intermediate R and R Studio users. It provides an introduction to the R software program, including its programming language, software environment, importing data, descriptive statistics, transforming variables, selecting and splitting data, exploratory tests, and visualization, common statistical methods in R such as means comparisons, ANOVA, linear regression, and basic visualization.

Developing Study Budgets in Clinical Research

The Office of Research Administration is offering a course for  Clinical Research Coordinators, Principal Investigators, Department Research Financial Administrators and anyone else involved in development and review of clinical research budgets. The course reviews processes for budget development for research proposals submission, budget review and working with ORA on securing appropriate funding for externally-funded agreements.  It also includes budgeting procedures for internally-funded clinical research. Some hands-on tools will be demonstrated and provided to all participants.  Course includes extended Q&A portion.
