The Office of the Vice Provost for Research & Scholarship gathers all the research events posted to our listservs into a once-weekly email, and we also feature them on our new online calendar. Check out our primer on how to promote your event or email vprs@miami.edu for help.

Friday, February 24, 2:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m.

COI in Research/UDisclose webinar and Q&A session

  • Do you have questions about the University of Miami’s (UM’s) policy on conflicts of interest (COIs)?
  • Do you have questions about how to answer the Foreign Engagement questions in UM’s UDisclose System?
  • Do you know that UM’s COI training is administered within the UDisclose System, on the first page of a user’s smart form – and nowhere else?

We’re available to help with these and any other disclosure questions!

  • Get immediate assistance with the UDisclose System by calling the UDisclose helpline at (305) 243-0877.
  • Join the upcoming COI/UDisclose webinar and Q&A session conducted via a Zoom meeting on Friday, February 24th, at 2:00 p.m.

The discussion will quickly review UM’s new policy that requires our community members to disclose interests to the University. Learners will identify the steps to achieve and maintain compliance with the policy, namely the required training and disclosure of interests associated with Institutional Responsibilities. A demonstration of the NEW UDisclose System will allow users to become familiar with how to designate a proxy and submit their outside interests to UM.

Registration is available through ULearn (http://www.miami.edu/ulearn/; keyword search “UDisclose System”) along with the schedule of future training webinars.

Engineering Cancer Cures & BME Seminar

Engineering Cancer Cures and the Department of Biomedical Engineering cordially invites you to attend our next Seminar, which will be held in hybrid mode on Tuesday, February 21st at 10 a.m.

Our seminar speaker, Dr. Lei Wang will talk about ‘Genetically encoded guidance of cell fate transitions and its applications’.

Dr. Lei Wang, is a post-doctoral associate advised by Prof. Ron Weiss in the Department of Biological Engineering and the Synthetic Biology Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). Her current research utilizes synthetic biology to build programable hiPSCs and organoids as models of human physiology.

The in-person meeting will be in the Gables campus in MEB 289 (Dean's conference room), McArthur Engineering Building, Coral Gables.

Concept to Commercialization: Launching a Biotech Company

Join U Innovation as we welcome Steve Altieri, Ph.D., J.D,, a partner at Morgan Lewis in Boston. Dr. Altieri focuses his legal practice on patent counseling, procurement and licensing in the life sciences. For this seminar, he will be discussing intellectual property development and licensing considerations when you are launching a biotech company based on university research.

Research Administration at the U

This class is part of the RAU Curriculum.The class provides a fundamental overview of research administration at the University of Miami  from proposal submission through award close and includes basic terminology, regulatory compliance, award negotiation, setup, reporting obligations, audits, and overall award management.

Please register for the RAU Curriculum in ULearn first and access this class through the Curriculum. It is important to complete this class in the order that the Curriculum is set up. If you would like to take this class as a standalone course, please contact vprs@miami.edu.

Documentation and Recording Compliance for Adverse Events

This course highlights the importance of recording and documenting adverse events in regards to being compliant with federal, state and local regulations and policies. In addition, attendees will learn how to identify potential causes for non-compliance and steps to correct and prevent such issues amongst their research teams.

Health Engineering Seminar - Dr. Abhinav Acharya

Our seminar speaker, Dr. Abhinav Acharya, will talk about ‘Calibrating Immunometabolism to Treat Diseases’.

Dr. Abhinav Acharya is an Assistant Professor in the Chemical Engineering Program in the School of Matter, Transport and Energy at Arizona State University

2-day Software Carpentry-R Workshop 2/23 + 24 at Medical Campus

Software Carpentry helps researchers get their work done in less time and with less pain by teaching them basic research computing skills. This two-day hands-on workshop will cover basic concepts and tools, including program design, version control, data management, and task automation.

Participants will be encouraged to help one another and to apply what they have learned to their own research problems.

Location: Don Soffer Clinical Research Center, CTSI Research Training Center, 7th floor.

Preparation for an FDA Audit

This course provides an overview of the preparation for and the conduct of an FDA audit. Upon completion of this course, the attendees should be able to describe what is involved in an FDA inspection, know how to prepare for an FDA inspection, and what takes place after the inspection.

Spring Term Salon Series

The Spring Term Salons, hosted by the University of Miami School of Architecture (U-SoA), are a series of outdoor events each Thursday evening in February for students, faculty, staff, alumni, anyone nterested in the events to learn about and discuss innovative research coming out of the U-SoA Research Labs and faculty research. 

Topic:  "Why integrate intelligence into the built environment?" featuring the RAD Lab and curated by Rodolphe el-Khoury, Dean of the School of Architecture, and Indrit Alushani, RAD Lab Manager
