The Sylvester Onco-Genomics Shared Resource (OGSR) offers state-of-the-art resources and services for genomics related oncology research. OGSR services include next generation sequencing, epigenomic assays, single cell genomics, spatial genomics, gene expression and molecular quantification, and sample processing. Major instruments in this shared resource facilitate a wide range of research applications, including next generation sequencing, single cell genomics, qPCR and dPCR, digital gene expression, sample preparation (e.g., nucleic acid extraction and purification), and sample quality assessment and quality control. Spatial multi-omics research is supported by new OGSR services, including the 10X Genomics Visium system and the NanoString GeoMx Digital Spatial Profiler platform, with these services provided in close collaboration with the other Sylvester Shared Resources. This seminar will cover the existing and new instruments and services of the OGSR and discuss their high impact applications in research projects.

This conference will cover a diverse range of metagenomics topics, including environmental pathogen surveillance and related predictive models of disease prevalence. Keynote talks will feature leaders in the fields of metagenomics and global health. Topics will include: (1) global updates on metagenomic mapping of urban biomes and beyond; (2) air, surface, and wastewater surveillance results, methods, and best practices; (3) bioinformatics tools for patient and environmental sampling; (4) microbial quantification, benchmarking, and variant tracking; and (5) ethical, legal, and social implications. Satellite sessions on the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine campus will include (1) field demonstration of wastewater sample collection and processing; (2) tour of a genomics shared resource that generates metagenomics data; and (3) a workshop on metagenomics analysis. The last day of the meeting will focus on the latest results from projects supported by the NIH Rapid Acceleration of Diagnostics (RADx) program for research on wastewater surveillance of SARS-CoV-2 and its use in informing public health strategies.

Each year, the American Biological Safety Association (ABSA) presents October as Biosafety and Biosecurity Month. Biosafety month is a period where we focus on and reinforce our attention to biosafety and biosecurity standards. This year, the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) Biosafety Office is reviewing crisis essentials, highlighting critical requirements labs must do to be prepared for an emergency response.

The discussion will quickly review UM’s new policy that requires our community members to disclose interests to the University. Learners will identify the steps to achieve and maintain compliance with the policy, namely the required training and disclosure of interests associated with Institutional Responsibilities. A demonstration of the NEW UDisclose System will allow users to become familiar with how to designate a proxy and submit their outside interests to UM.
