Safety in Science

BioRAFT Biological Registration Module

Dear Colleagues,

The Biosafety Office and the Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) are committed to keeping safety an essential element in your laboratory research. To this end, we are jointly rolling out the new biological registration module within the BioRAFT online platform. This system comprehensively tracks all biological research at the University and registers protocols for review by the IBC committee in one location.

As of September 1, 2021, the IBC will require that all non-clinical researchers register their IBC-related work in BioRAFT. The Biosafety Office will require all labs conducting biological research to submit a registration summarizing the nature of their work by October 1, 2021.

We look forward to working with your lab on this critical safety initiative. Please see below for resources and training available to help with your laboratory's biological registration.

Training & Resources

Tuesdays & Fridays @ 2PM

Institutional Biosafety Committee (IBC) Office Hours

The Institutional Biosafety Committee will provide hands-on guidance on the submission and biological registration process at twice-weekly office hours starting August 2021. For anyone needing more specific office hours, please feel free to reach out to ibcsupport@miami.edu to schedule a 1:1 appointment.

1st Wednesdays @ 1PM, 3rd Tuesdays @ 9AM

Biosafety Office Hours

Question and answer sessions on BioRAFT coinciding with regularly scheduled General Biosafety webinar sessions. The question, answer, and guidance will follow the trainings, starting roughly one hour after the meeting times noted, for those who are not in need of refreshing their biosafety training.

BioRAFT PI Start Guide

Developed by BioRAFT, provides a step-by-step overview of how to submit a new registration.

  • At this point all biological labs we currently have on record have been bio-enabled so that a registration can be submitted; you may have received recent email notification noting this.
  • If your lab has not been bio-enabled or in BioRaft, please reach out to us at biosafety@miami.edu and we can provide assistance.

Biological Registration Guide

Developed by the Biosafety Office, provides a brief overview of the submission process and outlines some of the concepts regarding submission particulars and common subjects that may spur initial questions from our research community.

Biological Hygiene Plan

A requirement for all biological registrations.  This document covers topics to ensure labs observe best practices and industry norms for safety in the lab as well as documenting whether research is subject to federal regulations.
