MED ’CANES AT THE PANDEMIC'S EPICENTER

 

Melvin La, M.D. ’14

As a medical volunteer, Dr. La learned valuable lessons in New York City at the height of the COVID-19 crisis.

 

Nashley Harrigan, M.D. ’11

As a nocturnist emergency medicine physician in the Bronx, New York, Dr. Harrigan is one of the first to treat COVID-19 patients.

Medical Alumni Weekend 2021 postponed

While Medical Alumni Weekend 2021 is important to us, your health and safety is foremost in our minds as we continue to navigate through the pandemic. This event will be postponed to Fall 2021, where we will celebrate the Classes of 1956, 1961, 1966, 1971, 1976, 1981, 1986, 1991, 1996, 2001, 2006, and 2011.

Frederic J. Guerrier, M.D. ’81

Dr. Guerrier gives from the heart. Since 1982, he hasn’t missed a single shift —on the second Tuesday of every month —as a volunteer at the St. Petersburg Free Clinic.

 

Juliet Ray, M.D. ’12, M.S.P.H. ’16, and Heidi Bahna, B.S. ’99, M.D.

What started as a mentorship transitioned into a life-changing partnership between two University of Miami alumnae.

 

Christopher Chen, M.D. ’00

University of Miami father and sons transform health care delivery for the elderly, poor and chronically ill with 80 primary care medical practices in 10 states.

 

Marc K. Rosenblum, M.D. ’79

Dr. Rosenblum, recipient of the Medical Alumni Association’s 2020 Hall of Fame Award, finds fulfillment in guiding treatments for the rarest brain and spinal cord tumors.

Emmanuel Thomas, Ph.D. ’05, M.D. ’07

The novel coronavirus becomes more than research for Dr. Thomas, whose wife, Caroline, is on the frontline of the pandemic as a nurse caring for COVID-19 patients.

Thomas Balkany, M.D. ’72

Dr. Balkany is the first recipient of the Noel L. Cohen Award from the American Neurotology Society. Dr. Balkany was honored for significant contributions to the field of otology and neurotology.

John G. Clarkson Freshman White Coat and Pinning Ceremony

The Miller School of Medicine’s incoming Class of 2024 formally entering the medical profession was a stirring moment for students, faculty, alumni and family members around the world.

 

ALUMNI GENEROSITY

Medical alumni and friends raised more than $50,000 to ensure that all 205 incoming students in the Class of 2024 received white coats and stethoscopes at the John G. Clarkson Freshman White Coat and Pinning Ceremony.
