On May 8, 2025, the Mailman Center for Child Development hosted the ArtAbilities Award Ceremony, celebrating the artwork of children with disabilities in Miami-Dade County Public Schools.
The evening included an art exhibition, entertainment by Alex and Friends Inc., face painting, dinner, and an award ceremony. Fifteen young artists were honored with medals, gifts, and recognition from family and friends. The children and their families were visibly happy and proud. One parent said, “We enjoyed the evening a lot and thank you for your support of our kids.” Another added, “I’m so proud that my daughter’s work was selected. I’ve been encouraging her drawing.”
Launched in 1995 through a partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools’ Art Department, the ArtAbilities program highlights the talents of students in special education, ages 5 to 21. Teachers submit student artwork each year, and selected pieces are juried by the ArtAbilities committee.
“Through their participation in ArtAbilities, children with disabilities discover their talents, experience successful competition, and contribute to the enrichment of our visual environments,” said Daniel Armstrong, Ph.D., Professor and Director of the Mailman Center.
Now in its 18th year, the ArtAbilities Collection continues to shine a spotlight on the creativity of children often defined by their challenges. By showcasing their art, the program helps break down stereotypes and encourages a more inclusive vision of community life—one that recognizes the strengths and potential of every child.
