March 24, 1961 - May 21, 2025
It is with the saddest of hearts that the Mailman Center shares the passing of Dr. Susan Dandes-- a cherished member of our faculty for 35 years and the clinical director of the Child Protection Team.
"Dr. Dandes was my first graduate student when I joined the faculty in 1985," said Dr. Daniel Armstrong. "I was able to recruit her to the Mailman Center and Department of Pediatrics faculty when she completed training, and she immediately demonstrated the early-career leadership characteristics that led to her outstanding professional contributions to the prevention, identification and treatment of child abuse and neglect and her lasting impact on systems of care for these children."
Dr. Dandes will be remembered not only for her professional contributions, but also for her kindness, wisdom, and generous spirit. She was a pillar of strength and support, and her presence will be deeply missed.

Grand Rounds Replay - May Guest Speaker: Abby Mutic PhD, MSN, CNM
Children in early child education settings (ECEs) spend most of their day indoors, where they may be exposed to air pollutants at levels far exceeding outdoor concentrations. These exposures disproportionately affect children in under-resourced communities and may impact respiratory health, school attendance, and kindergarten readiness. This presentation presented findings from a pilot and feasibility study employing passive silicone wristband and room air technology to measure toxicant exposure in metro ECEs and assessed the feasibility of an air filtration intervention to improve respiratory symptoms.

Integrating Data for Effectiveness Across Systems (IDEAS)
The Miami-Dade IDEAS Consortium for Children was organized by the University of Miami and four leading systems that impact early learning outcomes: Miami-Dade County Public Schools, The Early Learning Coalition of Miami-Dade/Monroe Counties, The Children's Trust, and the Miami-Dade County Head Start/Early Head Start Program.
IDEAS has recently partnered with the Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), with funding from The Children's Trust to create IDEAS-to-Action, an intiative that holistically assesses children's development and school readiness. IDEAS-to-Action will be operated as a learning community, including community-based organizations such as ConnectFamilias, Sant La Haitian Neighborhood Center, and the Overtown Children and Youth Coalition. Community leaders will collaborate with the research team to co-create community and child indicators that are relevant to families and other stakeholders in their communities.
