Training Opportunities

Families experience various challenges that affect outcomes for their children who are deaf/hard of hearing. How do we identify risk factors that the family system and/or child is facing and provide appropriate support with innovative solutions? This one-day conference will explore strategies used with families facing educational, communication, mental health, behavioral, access, and/or financial barriers. Join us to explore preventative and supportive strategies designed to build a foundation for success for children who are deaf/hard of hearing.

UM Medical School Panel

Shared Decision Making at the Intersection of Disability, Culture, and Language Accessibility

Mailman Center staff, Shelly Baer and Jairo Arana, along with Dr. Paul Mendez from the medical school, organized a panel of individuals with disabilities and caregivers to speak to second year medical students on Shared Decision Making at the Intersection of Disability, Culture, and Language Accessibility. The learning objective for this session was for medical students to describe the ability of all persons, regardless of disability, to provide valid consent that reflects respect and self- determination. The session emphasized informed, valid consent and the assumptions that physicians may make when taking care of a person with a disability. The panel consisted of adults with mobility disabilities, deaf and blind adults and a parent with an adult child with Down Syndrome.

Le Jardin Community Center

Le Jardin Community Center supports multiple early learning centers across Homestead and Florida City, reaching over 1000 children ages birth to 5 years old. Step Up AT has had the fortune of working directly with curriculum and disability staff to foster inclusivity through assistive technology coaching development.

Le Jardin Community Center also offers training and technical assistance to childcare programs to implement a center-wide evidence-based obesity prevention curriculum Healthy Caregivers Healthy Children (HC2). The HC2 curriculum covers four policies: Physical Activity, Beverages, Snacks, and Screentime. Each policy includes lesson plans and activities aimed at improving young children’s healthy eating habits, increasing physical activity levels, and reducing sedentary activities and screen time. These policies can be modified for children with disabilities and can also be shared with families.
