Graduate students excel in inaugural ‘Op-ed Challenge’

The “Op-ed Challenge,” held during the fall semester and sponsored by the Graduate School, gave students an opportunity to hone critical writing skills with a focus on research endeavors.

Laura McDonnell, a doctoral candidate in the Abess Center for Ecosystem Science and Policy, has attached dozens of high-tech sensors to blue and mako sharks in the Gulf Stream, turning them into animal oceanographers that help record information scientists can use to study the oceans.

 

Student wins award for linking toenails to carcinogens

Alex C. Stewart, a Master of Public Health candidate, received a second-place award from the American Public Health Association for a study that examined firefighters’ toenails to help identify those who have been exposed to dangerous heavy metal carcinogens.

Graduate Student Travel Support

The Graduate School has re-opened applications for the Graduate Student Travel SupportDegree-seeking master's and doctoral students at the University of Miami are eligible to apply for one-time travel support of an amount of up $1,000 to present at a scholarly conference or to present and/or attend a professional meeting. Fraternity Graduate Advisor Positions Available for 2023-2024

There are five (5) open positions for Fraternity Graduate Advisor for the next school year. The position requires successful candidates to live in one of the fraternity houses adjacent to the campus. The staff is supervised by the Dean of Students Office in cooperation with the Housing Corporation of the respective chapter. Priority for selection is not based on membership in a particular fraternity. In addition to the responsibilities and compensation from the University that are listed in the job description, successful candidates will also receive additional responsibilities and compensation from the individual fraternity in which they are placed, including a free room, a modest stipend, and a meal plan in cases where one is available. Open Graduate Assistant Positions in Dean of Students Office

The Dean of Students Office has a number of open graduate assistant positions for either incoming graduate students or students in three-year programs. Their ideal candidate would be someone with the ability to make a two-year commitment. Osher Center for Integrative Health | Bending the Aging Curve with Exercise

The Osher Center for Integrative Health will be hosting speaker Joseph Signorlie for the Wolfson Foundation Integrative Medicine Speaker Series. Dr. Signorile is a pioneer in applying the diagnosis/prescription model to tailor exercise for functional improvement and health in older persons.
