Diving Deep: An artists' book trip through the oceanic zones

Like the depths of the sea, the stacks of the University of Miami's Special Collections are filled with wonderful and mysterious sights to behold. Cathy Durso’s The Natural History Museum #2 is an artist's book that mirrors a museum, one that invites us to use it as a handheld exhibit to explore beneath the ocean's surface. Artists’ books challenge readers to engage with narrative and texts in new and different ways. Follow Jay Sylvestre as he takes you on a fascinating journey deep into the layers and textures of a book artist's interpretation of sea creatures housed in a colorful cabinet of curiosities. Register to attend this edition of the Deep Dives series on October 22, 2020, at 1:00 p.m.

How to design a chalk talk—the million dollar sales pitch

The chalk talk is many things—a sales pitch, a teaching demonstration, a barrage of questions, and a description of a future research program. The chalk talk is arguably the most important component of a faculty search interview. Yet few postdocs or grad students receive training or practice in giving a chalk talk. Read this essay on the basics of chalk talk design and preparation.
