When Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria impacted the hemisphere this September, many of our faculty, alumni and students got involved in their communities and looked for innovative ways to better protect people from future events. They demonstrated their commitment to improving and transforming lives. This eCane issue illustrates some of their work, and we hope you will be inspired by it. After all, solving problems – in arenas as large as skyscrapers and as small as the human eye – to transform lives is the heart of Cane engineering.

South Florida did not receive a direct hit from Hurricane Irma, but after the storm passed, thousands were affected by power outages that lasted from days to long, sweltering weeks. Across Florida, millions of people were impacted. In the aftermath of Irma and with the prediction that hurricanes will become more powerful in the future, many are wondering whether burying power lines underground would help prevent future outages. University of Miami College of Engineering Dean Jean-Pierre Bardet weighs in on that issue with UM News.
