Earlier this month, the College of Engineering brought our yearlong 70th anniversary celebration to a close during UM Homecoming and Alumni Weekend. The entire CoE community has made this past year a true milestone year.
We started our anniversary celebration with a luncheon honoring the founding chairman of the Department of Civil Engineering, Murray I. Mantell, who just celebrated his 100th birthday. Thank you, Dr. Mantell, for laying our foundation.
We held the inaugural CoE Senior Design Expo, where our students’ senior design capstone projects demonstrated innovation. During this expo, well attended by industry, several of our students received job offers on the spot!
We also opened the UM College of Engineering - Johnson & Johnson 3D Printing Center of Excellence Collaborative Laboratory, a great example of collaboration between academia and industry. If you haven’t yet gotten to see this incredible lab and its state-of-the art additive manufacturing equipment (also known as 3D printing), I invite you to stop by the College and check it out.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and your family. Thank you for everything you do and for being part of the UMCoE family.

As a young girl growing up in Venezuela, neither the University of Miami nor an engineering degree was on the radar for Maria Villasmil (BSIE ’16). But a move to Miami, a love of science and math, and the College of Engineering Scholarship Fund changed all that.

Sung Hee Joo, an assistant professor in the Department of Civil, Architectural and Environmental Engineering, received two grants from the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) for two distinct research projects concerning nanotechnology. The first research project, titled “Water Purification System for the Removal of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria Using a Graphene Bead Filter,” will develop and advance applications of nanotechnology for the removal of difficult-to-treat contaminants, specifically antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

The North American material handling industry is quickly shifting from the conventional petroleum-based equipment to the cleaner, more sustainable electrical-based equipment. Assistant professor in the Department of Industrial Engineering Seokgi Lee says the main driver for this change “is the lowered operation costs and reduced fueling by EMVs. Since restraining excessive energy consumption and limiting greenhouse gas emissions is required by most of today’s logistics companies, implementing a variety of affordable energy-saving and environmentally friendly operation strategies, such as EMVs, is an important priority."

As a junior at an all-girls high school, Juliana Albarracin participated in a field trip to the University of Miami, sponsored by the University’s Society of Women Engineers. Girls from high schools all over Miami-Dade who were interested in mathematics attended. At that event, Albarracin won an engineering contest, and that’s when, in her words, “I knew I was going to end up here.”

This summer I was working on my research project with Dr. Ozdamar in the Neurosensory Lab. The project is focused on finding any key differences between musical and non-musical subjects’ auditory pathway/response. We analyze auditory-evoked potentials based on measuring the subjects’ auditory pathway/response.
