I am pleased to announce that Joshua M. Friedman, a seasoned professional with experience in education, media, health care, and science, will join the University of Miami as senior vice president for Development and Alumni Relations on February 1, 2018.

Josh is the current chief development officer at the Arizona State University Foundation, where he helped plan and launch a bold $1.5 billion comprehensive campaign and contributed to three consecutive record fundraising years, each generating more than $200 million in new gifts and commitments.

In his new role, Josh will oversee all fundraising and alumni relations and will be instrumental in leading the University’s next fundraising campaign, which will support strategic initiatives, including increasing endowment funding for faculty, scholarships, and programmatic support.

Josh has led multiple successful, forward-thinking fundraising campaigns. Prior to joining the ASU Foundation, he worked at National Public Radio, where he served as the broadcaster’s senior director of individual giving. There, his team tripled individual giving by focusing on principal gifts and building solid fundraising systems.

Prior to NPR, Josh was director of development at Johns Hopkins University’s Berman Institute of Bioethics, one of the largest institutes of its kind and home to collaborative scholarship and teaching of ethics in clinical practice, public health, and biomedical science. He was also director of development for the Nobel Prize-winning Physicians for Human Rights, and a fundraising director within the Partners HealthCare hospital network, which includes Massachusetts General and Brigham and Women’s Hospitals.

Josh received his bachelor's degree in history from Johns Hopkins University. He is relocating to Miami with his wife, Marta, and two children, Clara and Henry.

Josh succeeds Donna Arbide, UM’s interim senior vice president for Development and Alumni Relations. Donna will remain at UM until March 1 to ensure a seamless transition. I wish to once again thank her for 31 years of service to the U.

Please join me in welcoming Josh and his family to the University of Miami family.
