Important Reminder:

Stay Vigilant Against Phishing Scams During Storm Emergencies

Dear University Community,

Federal agencies are now warning about an increase in cybercriminal activity that is common during major natural disasters. As we navigate through the uncertainties brought by Hurricane Milton, it is crucial to remain informed and vigilant about potential cyber threats.

Cybercriminals often take advantage of these situations to deceive individuals and gain access to personal information. They might impersonate official communications or create fraudulent messages that appear legitimate. To help protect yourself and your information, as well as the University, please keep the following best practices in mind:

  • Be skeptical: Exercise caution whenever you receive unsolicited email messages. Treat any unexpected messages with suspicion, regardless of the name or title displayed as the sender and/or within the message. Better to be cautious than to inadvertently fall victim to a scam.

  • Verify the source: If you receive a message that appears to be from a University department, do not respond directly. Instead, take a moment to verify the legitimacy of the message. You can do this by reaching out to the relevant department or by reporting the suspicious message to phish@miami.edu.

  • Protect yourself and the University: Remember the University will never request sensitive information like CaneIDs, email addresses, passwords, or Duo MFA access codes via email or online form.

By staying alert and informed, we can mitigate the risks posed by cybercriminals and their phishing scams.
