Use of Non-UM-Issued Devices to Connect to GlobalProtect VPN No Longer Allowed as of 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22
Dear University of Miami Faculty and Staff,
Due to several recent FBI and government cybersecurity advisories, the University of Miami is working on several initiatives to further enhance the security of our systems. A common tactic by cybercriminals is to gain access to a secure network in an attempt to compromise systems. To mitigate risk, the requirements for accessing the University's secure network via the virtual private network (VPN) GlobalProtect will be changing. These security measures are in alignment with University policies.
What is changing?
Beginning at 7 p.m., Friday, Dec. 22, 2023, access to GlobalProtect VPN will only be allowed via a University of Miami (UM)-issued device. Non-UM-issued devices will no longer be permitted to connect to GlobalProtect VPN. This important decision ensures that only authorized and secure devices are granted access to our University resources.
GlobalProtect VPN is not required for remote and off-campus access to many University enterprise systems, including, but not limited to, Workday, CaneLink, Epic/UChart, Microsoft Office 365 (e.g., email and Teams), Blackboard, Adobe Creative Cloud, cloud storage (e.g., Box and OneDrive), and Zoom.
What are UM-issued devices?
UM-issued devices are those purchased and maintained by the University of Miami and provided to faculty and staff by their associated school/college or department. These devices include configurations that allow IT to manage software updates and critical security applications. For more information, including how to request a UM-issued device (if needed), please review the frequently asked questions: https://it.miami.edu/globalprotect-vpn-faqs.
We appreciate your patience as we make cybersecurity updates to further enhance the security of our network and safeguard our sensitive data.
