Transplant Team Helps Baby Overcome Tremendous Odds
Ayaka Kandatsu celebrated her first birthday at Jackson Memorial Hospital last week, something her parents and even her physicians were unsure she would live to see. Ayaka was born with a rare disease that affected her gastrointestinal system. Without a transplant—illegal in her native Japan for children under 15 years old—Ayaka could not survive. But her life was saved after her parents Ryoji and Hiromi raised more than a million dollars and traveled thousands of miles to see the transplant team at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine. Tomoaki Kato, M.D., associate professor of surgery, was the lead surgeon for the five-organ transplant. More than half of the world’s multivisceral transplants have been performed by UM physicians at Jackson Memorial Hospital. Several Japanese networks have been following Ayaka’s story since she arrived in Miami for her transplant, which has captivated viewers in her country. Ayaka is expected to stay in Miami for another six months for follow-up. “Of course the procedure is unusual,” says Andreas Tzakis, M.D., Ph.D., director of Liver and GI Transplantation at the Miller School of Medicine. “Even more unusual were the logistical challenges for a child like this to come halfway around the world, the odds she had to overcome to get this transplant. But the most unusual is that she’s actually made it.” Information Technology Focus Groups The Department of Medical Information Technology periodically conducts focus groups to help improve its services to the campus community. The small-group sessions last 90 minutes and are scheduled during lunch. We provide the food; volunteer participants provide the opinions. Upcoming sessions will be held February 2, March 2 and 30, April 27 and May 25. If you’re interested in participating, you can read more details about the process and fill in the online form to volunteer, by visiting the Medical Information Technology web site at http://it.med.miami.edu/x931.xml.
