Bart Chernow, M.D., professor of medicine and vice provost for technology advancement, has won a Technology Leader of the Year Award from the Greater Miami Chamber of Commerce. The third annual awards were presented during a luncheon at Jungle Island on Friday, March 27. Dr. Chernow received the “Best Use of Technology” award, which he described as “an honor.”

The awards highlight individuals who have shown extraordinary technological hands-on experience and whose management of technology resources and technological innovations has made an outstanding contribution to their organization and community.

This distinguished award was given in recognition of Dr. Chernow’s creation and leadership of UM Innovation, his advancement of the UM Life Science Park from concept to the development stage, along with his work with numerous startup companies from UM and in the advancement of many discoveries by UM scientists.

The United Health Foundation has made a new $1 million commitment to help UM’s Department of Family Medicine and Community Health enhance the services at the Jefferson Reaves Sr. Health Center in Overtown. The Jackson Health System’s primary care clinic serves as the training site for residents in family medicine. With this latest award, the Foundation has committed nearly $6 million to expand access and provide for innovative programs at Jefferson Reaves since 2004.

In addition, the Foundation recently unveiled its new documentary photography book titled Faces of Hope: Celebrating Community Health Centers. The pictorial honors and highlights the vital role of community health centers such as Jefferson Reaves and the three other centers funded by the Foundation across the country.

“This kind of financial support, especially during these difficult economic times, is critical to the services we are able to provide to our community,” said Robert Schwartz, M.D., professor and chairman of family medicine and community health. “This award has allowed us to provide services to this community that would not be available under ordinary circumstances, such as nutrition counseling, mental health, physical therapy, specialized educational programs for chronic illness and community outreach. We are creating the medical home of the future for our patients who are most in need of these services.”

Fraudulent e-mails are currently circulating promising tax refunds or stimulus payments. These scams, called phishing attacks, pretend to come from legitimate Internal Revenue Service e-mail accounts. The e-mails tell users to follow a link to a Web site or to complete an attached document that request personal information that may include credit card numbers, bank account numbers, etc. Criminals use the information to empty the victims' bank account, run up credit card charges and apply for loans or credit in the victims' name. Some fake stimulus payment sites try to look authentic with pictures of the president, the White House, Congress and the American flag.

Harrington, a world-renowned expert in viral-induced malignant disease, died unexpectedly in January. His life and work continue to be an inspiration to his family and those who worked alongside him.

Learn how to use the InfoEd Proposal Development System to prepare and submit your proposal electronically to the NIH at the hands-on workshop on Wednesday, April 15, from 9 a.m. to noon at Dominion Tower, room 1003. InfoEd streamlines the proposal development process. It is web-based and accessible almost anywhere by Mac and PC users with no additional software. InfoEd populates agency forms, includes built-in agency validations, stores proposals in a secure environment and provides a database of all proposals submitted. This session will help participants create, route, submit and track proposals using the InfoEd System.

Did you know that stroke is the third leading cause of death behind heart disease and all forms of cancer combined? By the year 2010, it is estimated that 18.1 million people worldwide will die annually due to cardiovascular disease and stroke. Although advances have been made in the treatment and secondary prevention of stroke and vascular events, the number of people at risk is increasing. The challenges ahead will call for more accurately defining “global vascular risk” using the abundance of multi-dimensional data available and selecting people earlier for prevention strategies. Ralph Sacco, M.D., professor and chair of neurology, will share his valuable insights on the growing impact of vascular disease on America’s health at Epidemiology and Public Health Grand Rounds on Wednesday, April 15, from noon to 1 p.m. at the Clinical Research Building, conference room 989. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will host Christopher Francklyn, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry, microbiology and molecular genetics at the University of Vermont College of Medicine in Burlington. The Faculty Senate invites all faculty to attend the Distinguished Faculty Scholar Award ceremony and reception to honor Yadong Luo, Ph.D., professor and chair of management, on Monday, April 27, at 4 p.m. on the Coral Gables campus at the School of Business Administration, Storer Auditorium. Dr. Luo will also present a lecture titled "International Management in an Epoch of Global Co-Opetition," followed by a reception.

The Human Subjects Protections Program Brown Bag Lunch Series is intended to inform researchers and others who have an interest in research about issues surrounding Human Subjects Protections. The Sponsored Programs Education Workshop is a required institutional program for all key personnel listed on proposals. The goal is to educate key personnel and administrators about the fiscal and compliance issues of pre- and post-award management. The workshop will cover the most recent information on the grant process from finding funding opportunities to closing an account, review the principal investigator's role and responsibility for administering sponsored projects, explain established policies and procedures, and provide an overview of the central support services available with a focus on federal grants. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 29, from 9 to 11 a.m. at Dominion Tower, twelfth-floor conference room.

Please join us for the fifteenth annual Leon Schiff Department of Medicine Grand Rounds with guest speaker Nicholas Francis LaRusso, M.D., the Charles H. Weinman Endowed Professor of Medicine and medical director of the Center for Innovation at Mayo Clinic. Dr. LaRusso will present "Cholangiocytes, Cilia and Cysts: What's the Connection?" By attending, participants will have a better understanding of cholestatic liver disease. The lecture will focus on the importance of cholangiocytes to the physiology and pathophysiology of the liver, insights into the molecular mechanisms of ductal bile formation and hepatic cystogenesis and the importance of cilia in normal and abnormal cholangiocyte function. The event will take place on Wednesday, April 29, at noon in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, third-floor auditorium.

Please join us for Surgical Grand Rounds on Thursday, April 30, at 8 a.m. in the Rosenstiel Medical Science Building, fourth-floor auditorium. Gregory M. Buncke, M.D., director of the Buncke Clinic at California Pacific Medical Center, will present "Microsurgical Management of Extremity Injuries." Upon completion of this lecture, participants will be able to explain the early history of microsurgery and  how to manage amputation injuries.

Registration is open for a one-day seminar presented by the Joan K. Stout R.N. Nurses Training Program. The program is designed for health care providers who diagnose and manage critical ECGs and arrhythmias in various practice settings. Interactive lectures will include case-based presentations using the audience response system. The event will also feature advanced and basic skills workshops that will provide practice and faculty feedback to enhance learning. Sessions will focus on simple and complex patient case studies of supraventricular and ventricular arrhythmias, conduction defects and heart blocks, and 12-Lead ECG Abnormalities. 

The program is approved for 6.5 continuing education hours for nurses, respiratory therapists and physical therapists, and seven hours for paramedics. The registration fee is $125 for licensed professionals and $50 for non-licensed students, and includes learning materials, a continental breakfast and breaks; lunch is not included. Groups of three or more licensed professionals will receive a $25 per person discount. The program will be May 1, from 7:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Gordon Center for Research in Medical Education located on the first floor of the Clinical Research Building. The Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology will host Masayori Inouye, Ph.D., professor of biochemistry at the State University of New Jersey Rutgers in Piscataway. Dr. Inouye will present “Deciphering Bacterial Toxin-Antitoxin Systems” on Friday, May 1, at noon in the R. Bunn Gautier Building, room 118.

On Friday, May 8, Sylvester will host the 10th annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture and Cancer Research Poster Session in honor of its founding director, Charles Gordon Zubrod, M.D.

The event will begin at 1:30 p.m. at the Diagnostic Treatment Center, second-floor conference center. At 2 p.m., the 10th Annual Zubrod Memorial Lecture on "Nuclear Receptor Coactivators: 'Master Genes' and Targets of Disease" will be  presented by Bert O’Malley, M.D., professor and chair of the Department of Molecular and Cellular Biology at the Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, Texas. Dr. O’Malley is a pioneer in the field of molecular endocrinology whose work for the past 40 years has provided the scientific framework for understanding a variety of endocrine diseases and cancer. Immediately after the lecture, attendees are invited to view posters from 3 to 4:30 p.m., followed by an award ceremony at 4:30 p.m., where light refreshments will be served.

The goal of the event is to provide a competitive stimulus for creativity in research and an opportunity for the exchange of ideas. Faculty, pre- and post-doctoral trainees, residents, and medical and graduate students are encouraged to participate. The abstract submission deadline is this Friday. The Department of Pediatrics, Division of Child Clinical Psychology at the Mailman Center is currently enrolling participants for a research study that is validating a pediatric measure of acute stress disorder (ASD) in English and Spanish.  Participants are children between the ages of 8-17 who have experienced or witnessed potentially traumatic events such as car accidents, fires, frightening/painful medical procedures, and/or have been victims of community violence.
