new  Amador Family Fund and Funeral Arrangements

The University of Miami community continues to mourn the loss of Maria Amador and two of her children, who died tragically last week. Maria, a UM employee since 1991, was director of education at the Miller School’s Miami Project to Cure Paralysis.

In response to the outpouring of sympathy from the community for the Amador family, the University has established a fund to assist her daughter Bea, a UM student, and her son, Javier. Anyone wishing to contribute to this fund should send a check payable to the University of Miami, PO Box 248073, Coral Gables, FL 33124. Please include on the checks that funds are for the benefit of the Amador family.

The arrangements for the Amador family funeral are as follows: A viewing will be held today (Tuesday) from 6 to 10 p.m. at Caballero Rivero Woodlawn South Funeral Home, 11655 SW 117 Avenue, Miami. The funeral will be held tomorrow (Wednesday) at noon at the Christ Fellowship Church, 8900 SW 168 Street, Palmetto Bay; it will be followed by the burial at Woodlawn South Cemetery (same location as funeral home). After the burial, there will be a reception at the church.

new  UHealth Can Help You Fight Colon Cancer

Colon cancer is the second most common cause of cancer-related deaths, but less than half of all eligible people undergo any type of colon cancer screening despite its well-proven success in cancer prevention.

In recognition of March as National Colorectal Cancer Awareness Month, specialists from the Division of Gastroenterology and Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center would like to remind you of the life-saving procedures available to you and your loved ones here on the UHealth/Miller campus.

Gastroenterologists at University of Miami Hospital and UMHC/Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center use the highest quality endoscopic equipment that allows the visualization of polyps, cancer, and other lesions and can detect even small abnormalities in the colon lining. We also offer virtual colonoscopy for patients who are candidates. Performed using a CAT scan, virtual colonoscopy has been shown to be equivalent to conventional colonoscopy in identifying large polyps.

Who needs to be screened?
• Anyone over the age of 50 is at risk for having colon polyps and colon cancer, and a colon evaluation should be performed to identify and remove any lesions.
• People with a family history of colon polyps, colon cancer, inflammatory bowel disease, or other genetic predispositions to cancer should have these evaluations earlier than age 50.
• Rectal bleeding, weight loss, or change in bowel habits should prompt a colonoscopy regardless of age.

The University’s UMatter preventative health care benefits include -- at no cost to you -- an annual colonoscopy, fecal occult blood test, flexible sigmoidoscopy or double barium enema for people age 50 and over with University of Miami/Aetna medical insurance. If you have any questions, please ask a benefits expert at www.miami.edu/benefits/ask.

If you are interested in learning more about screening colonoscopies, or if you have other GI concerns, please do not hesitate to contact one of our GI experts at 305-243-UMGI (8644).

new  2009 American Cancer Society Institutional Research Grant

The American Cancer Society (ACS) Institutional Grant is providing funds for meritorious cancer research that cannot be readily supported through other funding mechanisms. The primary purpose of the ACS grant is to provide seed funds for the initiation of promising new projects or novel ideas by junior faculty members.

Applicants should be within six years of their first independent research or faculty appointment and must not currently hold any peer review funding. Awards of $45,000 are available for a one-year period.

The application deadline is Friday, April 17. For guidelines and application forms, please contact Kathy Salce in the Office of Education and Training at 305-243-2287 or ksalce@med.miami.edu.

new  UM/Aetna Medical Claims and Billing Assistance

UM/Aetna medical plan members may contact UM’s on-campus Aetna claims representative for assistance with billing and claims issues at 305-243-7167. If you receive a bill for covered services from an Aetna provider you must do the following:

In-Network
1. Make a copy of your Aetna ID card (front and back) and a copy of the bill. Send a copy of both to the provider who is sending you the bill. This will alert the provider to bill the insurance company. Provide an explanation of the issue.
2. Follow the same steps as above, but mail the information to the Aetna claims address on the back of your ID card. Provide an explanation of the issue.

Out-of-Network
1. Complete the claim form located at www.miami.edu/benefits/forms.
2. Send Aetna a copy of your Aetna ID card and a copy of the itemized bill. When filing a claim you will need to provide: member ID, billed charges, patient date of birth, procedure code(s), diagnosis code(s), provider name and address or tax ID, and indicate on the bill if the charges were paid.

If you would like assistance with medical claims issues from a University benefits representative, you must first complete the online HIPAA authorization. The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) provides rights and protections for participants and beneficiaries in group health plans. HIPAA includes protections for coverage under group health plans that limit exclusions for preexisting conditions and prohibit discrimination against employees and dependents based on their health status. To complete the authorization, log on to www.miami.edu/myUM, click "employee," then "benefits," under the UMatter Benefits section, click "HIPAA Authorization."

If you have any questions, please ask a benefits expert at www.miami.edu/benefits/ask.

Security Awareness Update: "Botnets: Is Someone Else Using Your Computer?"

Do you ever wonder why your computer is slow sometimes? It may be because you are not the only person using it. Your computer might be part of a botnet or zombie network. A botnet is a term used to define a group of computers that are seized by malicious software and given instruction from cyber criminals called bot herders. Botnet software is designed to be inconspicuous so you are not aware that your machine has been compromised.

This is an evolution from the typical computer virus which has an immediate and obvious effect on your computer. Since new computers are often compromised within minutes of being connected to an unprotected Internet connection, it should be no surprise that some bot herders control hundreds of thousands of computers. Unfortunately, there is no easy way to tell if your machine has been taken over by this software, but there are some tell-tale signs such as an outbox full of e-mail you didn’t send or noise coming from your hard drive even when you are not using your PC.

To read more, including steps to protect yourself and the University’s information, please visit http://www.med.miami.edu/hipaa/public/x385.xml. If you have questions related to this or any other HIPAA privacy or security related issue, please contact the Office of HIPAA Privacy & Security at hipaaprivacy@med.miami.edu.

Tai Chi for Health and Smoking Cessation
The University of Miami Division of Complementary and Integrative Medicine in conjunction with the Medical Wellness Center is conducting a research study to determine if Tai Chi exercise is effective for helping people to stop smoking. Patches, gum, hypnosis...if you've tried everything and still can't quit smoking, Tai Chi may provide the ideal mind-body awareness to help you put out that last cigarette. Tai Chi combines deep breathing with postures that flow from one to the next through a series of slow, continuous movements to help you focus and reduce the stress and cravings typically associated with smoking.

Tai Chi engages all of your senses during the exercises, so you don't have time to notice that you want a cigarette. The conscious breath in Tai Chi practice is also known to help regulate the respiratory system and lessen the severity of asthma, emphysema, and chronic bronchitis; all of which can afflict smokers. The course will focus on improving muscular strength and flexibility, heart and lung capacity, posture, balance, and the integration of mind and body.

If you qualify for this study, you will be assigned to a group of 8-12 people to participate in the Tai Chi exercise program three times per week for 12 weeks at the UM Medical Wellness Center. Classes are one hour long and will start the beginning of January. After the initial 12 weeks, you will also participate in a session once per week for the next 12 weeks. Master trainer Jef Morris will lead the Tai Chi course. Jef has been featured in articles in the Miami Herald and New York Times. The course cost is $84, which is the same cost as participating in the existing UM smoking cessation program. Upon successful completion of the program, Benefits Administration will reimburse the full amount to you if you are a UM employee. If you are not a UM Employee, then you will not be reimbursed for participating in the study.

To find out if you are eligible for the study or if you have any questions, please contact John Lewis, Ph.D., at 305-243-6227 or jelewis@miami.edu.
