Dr. Eduardo Alfonso Named Health Care CEO of the Year
Eduardo C. Alfonso, M.D., interim chairman of the Department of Ophthalmology, and medical director of Bascom Palmer Eye Institute at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine, was named Health Care CEO of the Year by the South Florida Business Journal. The 2008 Excellence in Health Care Awards were presented during a ceremony October 16 at the Broward County Convention Center in Fort Lauderdale. “I am sincerely humbled to be selected as the Healthcare CEO of the Year,” said Alfonso. “In healthcare today, the term CEO really means Credibility, Encouragement and Organization. I salute the Bascom Palmer team of 1,200 faculty and staff members and share this great honor with each one of them.” | |

The 23rd Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner Raises More Than $7 Million for the Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis
NFL Hall of Famer Nick Buoniconti and his son Marc hosted a sold out event, the 23rd Annual Great Sports Legends Dinner, at The Waldorf-Astoria hotel in New York, to benefit The Buoniconti Fund to Cure Paralysis. They were joined by sports heroes, philanthropic icons and business leaders who were out in full force to support paralysis research. The 2008 Great Sports Legend honorees were Jerry Rice, Andre Agassi, Scottie Pippen, Joe Gibbs, Helio Castroneves, Richard “Goose” Gossage, Ray “Boom Boom” Mancini, Angelo Dundee and Gabrielle Reece. At the event, South Florida philanthropist Christine Lynn received The Buoniconti Fund Award, and sports broadcaster and Buoniconti Fund supporter Bob Costas was emcee. The evening raised more than $7 million for the spinal cord injury research programs at The Miami Project to Cure Paralysis at the Miller School. Miller School Cardiologist Brings Leading-Edge Research to Dominican Republic Hector Jimenez, M.D., voluntary assistant professor of medicine, travelled to the Dominican Republic the first week of October to present two lectures on the diagnosis and treatment of severe coronary artery disease and the clinical applications of studies on myocardial perfusion at the X Congreso Internacional del Instituto Dominicano Cardiología 2008. Participation at the Congress was facilitated by the International Medicine Institute at the Miller School in an effort to bring together experts in cardiology from around the world to lend their expertise for the collective education of international specialists. Holiday Decorating Do's and Don'ts As the holidays approach, the Office of Environmental Health and Safety wants to remind you of some decorating do's and don'ts. Do not use decorative sprays or hang decorative materials (lights, ornaments, etc.) on any fire protection equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler heads, smoke detectors or fire alarm pull boxes or near exits or emergency lights. New Procedures on Resubmitting NIH Applications The National Institutes of Health has changed their policy for resubmitting or amending applications in an effort to fund high-quality applications sooner with fewer resubmissions. If you are applying for NIH funding here’s what the new policy means to you: • If you submit an original or compete a renewal application that is due on January 25, 2009 or later, the NIH will only accept a single amended application. James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program, Team Science Program Submissions Now Being Accepted The Office of Research is now accepting internal submissions for the James & Esther King Biomedical Research Program, Team Science Program. The award supports broadly-based, multi-disciplinary research projects with well-defined major objectives or themes addressing the prevention, diagnosis, treatment or cure of tobacco-related diseases. The program goal is to increase grant applications and competitively position Florida institutions for high-level federal funding. Each grant proposal must encompass at least three but no more than five interrelated individual research projects. Team Science Program projects are distinguished from collections of individual projects because they have a demonstrated synergy between investigators and shared research resources and goals. Jackson, M.D., from the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, is seeking idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF) patients for an ongoing phase II clinical trial of vasodilator therapy (sildenafil). The objectives will be to assess possible therapeutic benefits of a vasodilator, sildenafil, on exercise tolerance and dyspnea in IPF patients and to observe changes in post-exercise markers of oxidant stress. The AIDS Clinical Research Unit, directed by Margaret Fischl, M.D., is recruiting participants for the following studies: • An investigational polyclonal caprine IgG, HRG214, for HIV patients not responding to antiretroviral therapy. HRG214 contains antibodies that targets HIV infected CD4 cells and specific regions on HIV. Laboratory/animal studies suggest these antibodies are capable of killing or disabling HIV and preventing further infection. Participants must have HIV RNA < 5000 copies/ml and CD4 cells < 200 cells/cmm. The study will evaluate 3 increasing dose of HRG214 in part I and compare HRG214 to optimized antiretroviral therapy in part II. HFG214 is given IV over about 30 minutes three times a week for up to 26 weeks. $100 provided each completed week of HRG214 treatment and $25 each completed week of observation • A phase II study of investigation use of recombination human keratinocyte growth factor (rHuKGF, palifermin) for patients with incomplete immune recovery on HAART. rHuKGF may enhance thymus production of lymphocytes and increase CD4 cell counts. Participants must be 18 years and older, receiving antiretroviral therapy for at least 6 months with HIV RNA <200 and CD4 cell count <200 cells. The study will evaluate 3 doses (20, 40 60 mcg/kg) of rHuKGF compared to placebo. rHuKGF given IV bolus daily for 3 days. Follow up study visits at weeks 1, 2, 4, 8, 12 and 24 with thymus CT scans at entry and week 12. • A phase II of an investigational glycosylated recombinant human IL-7 (CYT017, a cytokine that aids T-cell development and improves T-cell survival). Participants must be 18 years of age, receiving HAART for at least 12 months and have an HIV-1 RNA level < 1,000 copies/ml and CD4 cell count of 101 - 400 cells/ccm. The study will evaluate three increasing doses (10, 20, 30 Fg/kg) of IL-7 given by SQ injection once a week for 3 weeks. Up to $275 in food certificates provided.
